Weekly Previews for January 11, 2012

This is my huge week (in number of comics), and one day (probably just before it's not my huge week anymore, as these things go) I'll switch to getting my comics on the second week of the month instead of the first. Then maybe I'll be up-to-date with all of the books coming out. But, for now, I'll just mention the slew of regulars that're released this week and comment only on the ones about which I have something to say.

(Also, I missed last week's Previews, but there was really very little to speak of. Only three books I was looking at, only one was iffy, and I was very tired. So, no Previews. Last week, that is. This week, plenty.)

Weekly Previews for December 14, 2011

Christmas preparations have put me a bit behind this week. It also doesn't help that the second week of the month is my largest in terms of pull-list books. With a trio of Bat-books, a couple of Dark books, and the newest issue of The Unwritten, DC's taking the lion's share this week. Buffy, Jim Henson, and a coloring book (!) round of the rest of the PrePostviews this week, so read on and check it out.

Weekly Previews for November 9, 2011

We didn't get to make our monthly trip to the comic shop last week, and there are no non-pull list books this week, so it's a pretty boring day for the Previews. We've got a bunch of #3s I have yet to see the #2s of, and the start of the new parallel stories (kinda) in The Unwritten. (They're releasing the regular issue and a “point five” issue a couple weeks later that are stand-alone and give some insights into the history of the cabal.) So, being that I can't say anything about them, here's a completely comment-less installment of the Previews!

Weekly Previews for December 2, 2010

Previews, like comics, are a day later than usual this week for Thanksgiving. I hope all the Americans reading this had a good holiday, and I hope all the non-Americans can forgive us for pretending the whole world should care about one of our national holidays.

This is a very light week for me, with only one book I know I'm getting (the penultimate issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8) and a couple of others of interest. No DC books, either. The only one I'd really think about is the Batman 80-page Giant, but neither the solicit nor the cover got me interested enough to even consider it. Read on to see what did pique my interest.

This may be a first, but I have no DC books I'm looking at this week. If I'd been getting Batman and Robin (like I probably should have), I'd have that, but no. Nothing. But, with the newest issues of Buffy and Chaos War, The Shepherd's Tale (all about Shepherd Book from Firefly and Serenity), and some new titles by some really good creators, I've got my plate full anyway. Weekly Previews for August 18, 2010

There's plenty to look at this week: a Buffy one-shot leading up to next month's release of the start of the culminating arc of the Season Eight storyline; new issues of Angel and Secret Avengers; a new miniseries by Brian Clevenger of Atomic Robo fame; and a smattering of other books that caught my eye.

Note: The Weekly Previews may contain spoilers from previous issues of the titles mentioned, so don't read on if you haven't read them yet (and want to have actual surprises upon reading said books).

How I Got Into Comics, Part One

I got into comics because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My wife and I lovelovelove watching Buffy and Angel (and Firefly, for that matter — we really like Joss Whedon, OK?), and were, like many, sad to see them end. Except we didn't actually see them end. We didn't start watching either show until they were off the air. That's how we watch every show. We don't get TV reception and really don't want to spring for cable. Everything we see, we see through the magic of DVD.

Except, that's not quite how it started. My wife actually began watching Buffy on TV before we were living together and while she had TV access. She got season 4 for Christmas soon after and watched it (without me!) rather obsessively. Finally, she dared let me into this wonderland, and we were both hooked. We slowly got the rest of the DVDs of Buffy, then started on Angel, and have watched both series several times in their entireties since. They went out well, I think. Angel has the most perfect series finale we could hope for: it is a perfect summation of what the show was about, and it (almost) completely quelled our anger over the show's somewhat abrupt cancellation. We could (mostly) live with the Buffy and Angel worlds being what they were and leave it at that.
