Weekly Previews for September 14, 2011

So, it's still Wednesday, right? So the Previews aren't that late, right? Huh? Oh well. There are a lot of books to go through right now, so let's just get started.

27: Second Set #1 (of 4)

  • Written by Charles Soule
  • Art by Renzo Podesta
  • Cover by Scott Forbes

The next, new reader-friendly chapter in the 27 saga begins HERE. Almost a year after the events of 27: FIRST SET, Will Garland, down-on-his-luck rock star, is desperate to recapture his lost fame. How far will he go, and will he encounter more cosmic craziness and intense action on the way? Answers: very far indeed, and absolutely. But on the plus side – groupies!

I met Charles Soule at this year's HeroesCon. He's a nice guy who's really passionate about this book. I ended up getting the First Set from him there because I never got it when it came out originally. I liked it enough that I'll probably pick up this Second Set though I think my wife might get more out of it. I'm a big music fan, but I don't tend to remember anything about individuals or bands — I more just remember the music itself. So, I'm interested to see what she thinks (she hasn't gotten around to reading it yet).

Status: (Probably) Buying It.

Alpha Flight #4

  • Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak
  • Art by Dale Eaglesham & Andrew Hennessy
  • Colors by & Sonia Oback
  • Covers by Phil Jimenez, Dale Eaglesham & Andrew Hennessy

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN!

The fight against the Flight continues! As our heroes fight to survive their own country hunting them down the traitorous Vindicator creates a team of her own, gathering a group of former enemies of Alpha Flight into the deadly ALPHA STRIKE! However, the remaining Alphans reach out to some unusual allies of their own. Marvel All-Stars Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, along with artist extraordinaire Dale Eaglesham, continue their highly-anticipated resurrection of the fan favorite title, ALPHA FLIGHT!

Likin' it. It's nothing amazing, but it's good fun.

Batman and Robin #1

  • Written by Peter J. Tomasi
  • Art & Cover by Patrick Gleason & Mick Gray

Battling evil with his son, Damian, at his side, Batman now realizes that the hardest part of the job may be trying to work together!

As Batman and Robin try to adjust to their new partnership, a figure emerges from Bruce Wayne’s past: His name is NoBody, and he’s not happy that Batman Incorporated is shining a light on his own shadowy war against evil...

I think Damian is one of the better things they've done with Batman in recent years (actually most of what they've done has been really good lately). This series (at least at the outset) looks like it'll focus on his violent methods and how that might not be so good — which sounds really interesting. But (and there's always a “but”) I'm getting a lot (for me) of books and I'm already adding some extra books from the New 52 so can I afford to add this, too?

(Not that it'll probably matter because I didn't add it to my pull list and I'm sure they've already sold out at my shop. Maybe they'll be able to get some more in by the time I go to the shop again, though.)

Status: In Consideration.

Batwoman #1

  • Written by J.H. Williams III & W. Haden Blackman
  • Art & Cover by J.H. Williams III

At last! Batwoman’s new series begins, from the multiple award-winning creative team of J.H. Williams III and Haden Blackman!

In “Hydrology,” part 1 of 5, Batwoman faces deadly new challenges in her war against Gotham City’s underworld – and new trials in her life as Kate Kane.

Who or what is stealing children from the barrio, and for what vile purpose? Will Kate train her cousin, Bette Kane (a.k.a. Flamebird), as her new sidekick? How will she handle unsettling revelations about her father, Colonel Jacob Kane? And why is a certain government

At last! indeed. I've been waiting for this for, what, 10 months now? Whatever, I'll take it. Very excited about this series. I just hope my expectations don't sour my enjoyment.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9: Freefall #1

  • Written by Joss Whedon & Andrew Chambliss
  • Pencils by Georges Jeanty
  • Inks by Dexter Vines
  • Cover by Steve Morris
  • Variant Cover by Jo Chen
  • 25th Anniversary Variant Cover by Georges Jeanty

Season 8 ended with a bang when Buffy cut the world off from the hell dimensions and all supernatural influence. Great, right? Except Buffy has left her best friend, Willow, powerless, and ended the long line of vampire slayers, leaving her hated by the hundreds of girls who recently stood behind her. Newly relocated to San Francisco, Buffy can count on a fresh start, and focus on what she’s good at—slaying.

And I've been waiting for this one all summer. Again, very excited.

Demon Knights #1

  • Written by Paul Cornell
  • Art by Diogenes Neves & Oclair Albert
  • Cover by Tony S. Daniel

Set in the Dark Ages of the DC Universe, a barbarian horde is massing to crush civilization. It’s fallen to Madame Xanadu and Jason Blood, the man with a monster inside him, to stand in their way – though the demon Etrigan has no interest in protecting anyone or anything other than himself! It’ll take more than their own power to stop an army fueled by bloodlust and dark sorcery, and some very surprising heroes – and villains – will have no choice but to join the fray!

I'm really excited about this series. Which is odd, because I know next to nothing about the characters, I don't think I've ever seen any of the artists' works, and I really only know Paul Cornell from one or two things, but … it's the frikkin' Dark Ages, man. And I really liked the one or two things I've read by Paul Cornell. And it doesn't seem like standard superhero fare, so I'm giving it a shot instead of getting yet another Batman book.

Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1

  • Written by Jeff Lemire
  • Art by Alberto Ponticelli
  • Cover by J.G. Jones

It’s Frankenstein as you’ve never seen him before, in a dark new series from acclaimed writer Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH) and artist Alberto Ponticelli (UNKNOWN SOLDIER)!

Frankenstein is part of a network of strange beings who work for an even stranger government organization: The Super Human Advanced Defense Executive! But can he protect the world from threats even more horrifying than himself? And since he’s vilified for who and what he is, will he even want to take on this mission?

This sounds really interesting, too, but I can't fit so many books into my budget, and there's one or two that're ahead of this on the list, anyway. But I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #5

  • Written by Mark Andrew Smith
  • Art & Cover by Armand Villavert

After finding old comic books in which the hero beats their parents again and again, the Gladstone’s cadets band together to go head to head against the old superhero in an effort to restore their parents’ villainous honor! Then things go horribly wrong...

Still loving this book. Get it, read it to your kids (but watch out for a little rough language — mostly a “damn” here and there).

Grifter #1

  • Written by Nathan Edmondson
  • Art by Cafu
  • Cover by Cafu & Bit

The DCU’s most wanted man stars in his own series!

Cole Cash is a charming grifter few can resist. And yet he’s about to be branded a serial killer when he begins hunting and exterminating inhuman creatures hidden in human form – creatures only he can see!

Can the biggest sweet talker of all time talk his way out of this one when even his brother thinks he’s gone over the edge?

Another one I'd like to pick up if I had unlimited funds. I've really been enjoying Who is Jake Ellis? and this seems like a pretty good fit for Nathan Edmondson's writing (or at least an approximate match of the feel of “Jake Ellis”). It fell in favor of Animal Man and Demon Knights. Sorry, Nathan, you're a really nice guy. I'll be keeping my eye on this one, too, though. I might have to change my mind.

Herc #7

  • Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak
  • Pencils by June Brigman
  • Covers by Carlo Pagulayan

SPIDER-ISLAND TIE IN!

You loved it when Herc dressed up as Thor, but can you handle the senses-shattering debut of... THE INCREDIBLE SPIDER-HERC?!?! And versus… THE X-MEN??? Though he is the newly self-appointed protector of Brooklyn, when a rash of unusual occurrences begin breaking out in Manhattan, Hercules finds himself "infested" with Spider-Powers of his own. Unfortunately, our web-slinging former demigod soon finds himself under the thrall of the insidious intelligence behind Spider Island and in a duel to the death against fellow champions The X-Men. Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente join up with artist June Brigman to deliver a pulse-pounding, wall-crawling [!!!] adventure with Marvel’s lovable lug, HERC!

I'm starting to wish this title wasn't dragged into every event, but it'll still probably be good. Van Lente and Pak managed to start the series with a six-issue (!) Fear Itself tie-in arc that hardly felt like a tie-in, so maybe they can handle this one, too.

Legion Lost #1

  • Written by Fabian Nicieza
  • Art & Cover by Pete Woods

Seven heroes from the 31st century have traveled back to the present day. Their mission: Save their future from annihilation. But when the future tech they brought with them fails, they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish world that, for them, is the ultimate struggle to survive!

Don’t miss the start of this all-new LEGION series illustrated by Pete Woods – fresh off his spectacular run on ACTION COMICS – who is joined by writer Fabian Nicieza (RED ROBIN)!

And I'd really like to get this one, too. I've been loving Fabian Nicieza's writing on Red Robin, and this is a really interesting concept. For now, it's doomed to the same fate as Grifter and the others: keep an eye on it, see if I'll be forced to squeeze it in, somehow.

Status: Of Interest.

Resurrection Man #1

  • Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
  • Art by Fernando Dagnino
  • Cover by Ivan Reis & Joe Prado

It’s the return of Mitch Shelly – and he’s still dead.

Resurrection Man can’t stay dead for long, though – and with each rebirth comes new and unexpected powers. But his many returns have not gone unnoticed, and forces are gathering to learn what’s so special about him – and to see which of them will finally stop Resurrection Man dead.

This is one I'm not passing up on. It's pretty much just too cool a character concept to pass over, especially with DnA writing.

The Unwritten #29

  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Art by Peter Gross & Vince Locke
  • Cover by Yuko Shimizu

In “On to Genesis” part 3 of 4, Tom goes to extreme measures to get to the truth about his father’s activities in 1930s New York – but it’s in the present day that the biggest revelations hit, when Tom comes face-to-face with a golden age Super Hero.

I've yet to read part 2, but I'm liking this look at comic book stories (after all the literary references before). It's nice that they acknowledge the importance of these stories on people. I guess movies and television come next?
