This may be a first, but I have no DC books I'm looking at this week. If I'd been getting Batman and Robin (like I probably should have), I'd have that, but no. Nothing. But, with the newest issues of Buffy and Chaos War, The Shepherd's Tale (all about Shepherd Book from Firefly and Serenity), and some new titles by some really good creators, I've got my plate full anyway. Keep reading to see it all.

This is it! After 101 issues, the writing team of Spidey Web-Heads says good-bye as the historic era known as BRAND NEW DAY comes to an end in a triple-sized SPECTACULAR! Over the past three years, he's faced New Ways to Die, a Gauntlet, and a Grim Hunt, and, through it all, Spider-Man has stood stronger than ever. But while recent events may have drastically changed Peter and his friends, the ol' Parker luck threatens a turn for the even-worse at any second. One thing's for certain though, the sun is setting on the Wall-Crawler's Brand New Day, and tomorrow begins right here!
I really like Spider-Man. I like the whole working-class superhero thing; I like that he has normal, everyday problems; I like when his web-shooters run out of fluid and he has to improvise. I'd like to follow Amazing Spider-Man, but the three-a-month schedule meant I wouldn't have been able to follow two other books I like, so I picked up the “Shed” storyline (after the fact) because it looked so good, and that's all from Brand New Day that I read. Except for the 104-page #600, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
So, here's another anthology-style book. It's only 64 pages (for the same price as #600), but it's still a good deal if the content's good. I'll take a look because, even though they're dropping it to twice-a-month and I'm intrigued (if not excited) about Big Time, I still don't think I can afford to follow this book month after month. Which is a shame because, like I said, I really like Spider-Man.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #38

While Super Buffy is fighting side by side with Spike in Sunnydale, Angel is on the other side of the world fighting demons of his own. As Twilight he was given a clear mission in regard to Buffy—help her reach the next plane, together create a new world, and end all suffering. But Buffy doesn’t play by the rules, and this “higher plane” and a lifetime of happiness with Angel wasn't gonna cut it—not if she had to sacrifice her family to keep it. And now Angel has to answer for his failings as Twilight—willingly or not.
Back in Sunnydale everyone is fighting for their lives against a horde of demons, and someone close to Buffy joins forces with a villain from the past to strive for a common goal—protect the seed.
So, my wife and I usually read Buffy and Angel together, but we've been busy and haven't had a chance to sit down together to read either. So, I'm a bit behind on my reading. I really enjoyed the first issue of this final arc — it quelled a few concerns I'd been having with the story. I really must get back on track with my reading, but, hey, that means I'll get to read double this month!
Chaos War #3
- Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
- Penciled by Khoi Pham
- Cover by Bryan Hitch
THE END OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE IS NIGH! As the penultimate step in the destruction of all creation, the CHAOS KING’S annihilating army of slave gods -- including an undead (and angry) ARES, GOD OF WAR -- takes on every divine pantheon on this mudball called Earth! Can Thor, All father Hercules and the God Squad rally Earth's feuding gods to beat back their common enemy and save existence itself? Or will a shocking betrayal pave the way for the triumph of chaos and darkness? More epic, divine madness from New York Times Bestselling "Incredible Hercules" writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and fan-favorite penciler Khoi Pham!
Can't say too much on the story because I haven't been to the shop to get #2, yet. (Damn double-issue months!) I'm still looking forward to this, though — I always like getting some Hercules and Cho.
Iron Man/Thor #1
- Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
- Pencils by Scot Eaton
- Inks by Jaime Mendoza
- Cover by Ron Garney
Thor, God of Thunder, Son of Asgard, heir to the ancient and mythic heritage of divine power! Iron Man, invincible hero, miracle of technology, offspring of scientific genius and engineering wonder! These two mightiest of Avengers come together to face a menace that is both magical and technological, and which threatens to wipe away the pantheons of legend and science so it can replace them with a shocking new order for the Twenty First century! Written by fan favorites DAN ABNETT and ANDY LANNING (Guardians of the Galaxy) and penciled by SCOT EATON.
Even though this seems designed for Marvel-movie watchers, I've heard much good word about the writing team (though I haven't gotten to read any much of it — just Road to War of Kings), and I do like the premise. The magic/tech pairing is one any fantasy lover can appreciate. I'm certain I won't be picking this up (too much else to get to fit it in), but I'll keep my eye on it as a possible trade-wait book.
Ozma of Oz #1
- Written by Eric Shanower
- Pencils & Inks by Skottie Young
- Colors by Jean-Francois Beaulieu
- Lettering by Jeff Eckleberry
- Cover by Skottie Young
Dorothy Gale plunges into adventure again, this time with a talking chicken named Billina. Dorothy and Billina are washed off their sailing ship to face drowning, starvation, and screaming Wheelers, strange men with wheels instead of hands and feet. The multiple Eisner Award-winning and New York Times bestselling team of Shanower and Young returns to Oz with this comics adaptation of L. Frank Baum's third Oz book.
Here's another one I won't actually pick up but wanted to mention, anyway. I'll be getting all of these Oz-book adaptations eventually, either in hardcover or TPB, but for now I'll just enjoy the covers and be happy they're being made.
Serenity: Shepherd's Tale (HC)
- Written by Zack Whedon
- Art by Chris Samnee
- Colors by Dave Stewart
- Cover by Steve Morris
One of Serenity’s greatest mysteries is finally revealed in Shepherd’s Tale, filling in the life of one of the show’s most beloved characters—Shepherd Book!
Who was Book before meeting Mal and the rest of the Serenity crew, how did he become one of their most trusted allies, and how did he find God in a bowl of soup? Answers to these and more questions about Book’s past are uncovered in this original graphic novel by rising stars Zack Whedon (Dr. Horrible, Terminator, Fringe) and Chris Samnee (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps, Daredevil). A pivotal chapter in the ongoing Serenity saga, Shepherd’s Tale is also a rollicking, action-packed epic in its own right!
I've been eagerly awaiting this from the moment I heard about it. Shepherd Book was one of the most interesting characters in Firefly, and it was unfortunate that he only had a death scene in Serenity. It'll be interesting to see what his past was like, as so much was hinted at in the show.
Warriors Three #1
- Written by Bill Willingham
- Pencils by Neil Edwards
- Inks by Scott D. Hanna
- Cover by Salvador Espin
Hath the world known anyone so noble as Hogun? So dashing as Fandral? So… er… great as the mighty Volstagg? HATH THE WORLD EVER KNOWN ANYTHING LIKE THE WARRIORS THREE? The answer is “no,” and that's probably a good thing, for the tectonic plates of Midgard most likely could not withstand such… ah… might. But lo, an evil is brewing down in the depths of Hel that neither man nor God is prepared for. When an ancient monster is let loose on the world, only the WARRIORS THREE are able to rise to the challenge! From the bestselling comics writer BILL WILLINGHAM (Fables) and breakout artist NEIL EDWARDS (Fantastic Four) comes a tale of such magnitude the Marvel Universe has never seen!
So, the upcoming Thor movie spawns yet another book. I'd normally not even take a look at this, but, damn, if it isn't written by Bill Willingham (a great writer and a great guy, if you ever get to meet him). Looks like I'll have to take a look at it, after all.
