Weekly Previews for July 6, 2011

I guess not getting into the summer events (though I'm still a bit on the fence with Flashpoint) means there are hardly any interesting books to look at. There's absolutely nothing coming out this week that I'd been keeping my eye on (since Jonathan Hickman's new Image book The Red Wing seems to be delayed — it's not in my shops new releases listing for this week, anyway). Still, there are a few books of interest that slipped under my radar (partly because almost all are from smaller publishers and two are more kid-oriented). Read on and see what they are.

Cap and Thor! Avengers

  • Written by Fred Van Lente
  • Art & Cover by Ron Lim

This summer, Marvel Studios is bringing to life two of the AVENGERS in THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. But their adventures don’t end on the silver screen. Pick up this 48-page book for two whole new stories starring Thor, Cap, and all your favorite characters from the films! Citadel of Spires: When Fandral—one of the Warriors Three—is taken captive, it’s up to Thor, Sif and Loki to get him back… despite going up against one of the fiercest creatures in the nine realms! U-Base: When Hydra’s U-Boats take out an Allied target, it’s up to CAPTAIN AMERICA and his HOWLING COMMANDOS to strike back! The heroes sneak in to a Hydra U-Base, but there they find that the tentacles in the Hydra logo might not be simply symbolize! From FRED VAN LENTE (Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hercules) and RON LIM (Silver Surfer, Infinity Gauntlet) comes a duo of Adventures from this summer’s hottest heroes!

So, yeah, another book that exists because of this summer's movies. But, I quite enjoy just about anything Fred Van Lente writes, and this looks like it'll be a fun one-shot. At $5, it's a little pricey, but if it looks good and I can find room for it, I'll give it a shot.

Flight, Volume 8

  • Edited by Kazu Kibuishi

Flight is a full-color anthology of visual short stories by some of the hottest artists in the field. The contributors range from top animators working at Pixar and other major studios to emerging web cartoonists and established comic book and graphic novel creators. Flight Volume 8 is the latest and last volume in the successful Eisner Award-nominated series.

This is the final volume of Flight. I've only seen a few of the early volumes, but some of my favorite pieces of all time are in those, so I'm sure there's some magic in this final volume as well. Not something I'll pick up right now, but I'd like to add all of these to my collection at some point in the future.

The Skrumps

  • Writing & Art by John Chandler

First introduced as a bonus strip in the FRAGGLE ROCK VOL. 1 hardcover collection, The Skrumps are back in their own special issue! This is the very first ever, full-length SKRUMPS comic by creator John Chandler, brought to you by Archaia and The Jim Henson Company. The Skrumps are a uniquely colorful troupe of hilarious characters that live in the imaginary world of Skrumpland. In this one-shot, the Mooch finds that his mooching ways might not make him as cool as he thought he was, and he gets rejected by all the Skrumps. So, he decides to start giving back by adopting an unusual pet in need of a home. But he’s in way over his head as he realizes this is maybe too much for a Skrump like him to handle!

I haven't seen the backup that introduced this to the world of comics, but it looks like fun, especially for the kids.

Taro and the Carnival of Doom

  • Writing & Art by Sango Morimoto

Who is that masked villain?

When King Crossout lures Terrie to a creepy carnival, he's determined to defeat Terrie once and for all. But Terrie is fearless, and he finds a new friend to join the fight! Battle lines are drawn (and erased), secrets are revealed, and sharks sing (?) in the final fight for the fate of Doodledom.

My daughter has picked up the first two volumes of the Taro books, and she loves them. It's a fun concept: Taro loves to doodle, and a wizard gives him a magic pencil which he can use to turn into Terrie, a cute terrier, enter the comic book world, and make his creations come to life. Also, the books have fun extras at the end (and throughout, maybe?). Great book for kids.
