After such a quiet past few weeks, things are starting to ramp up again. This week's big with over half a dozen shoe-ins and a few more comics to look out for. If this keeps up all month I won't be able to pick up everything the next time I go into the shop. Let's see what all the fuss is about….
Alpha Flight #2
- Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak
- Pencils by Dale Eaglesham
- Cover by Phil Jimenez
Alpha Flight... traitors??? After saving their country from the hammer-wielding XXXXX, The Flight are captured by the newly risen Unity Party and branded as traitors. Now they must escape from the bowels of the top-secret facility, Department H, they once called home. In doing so they must confront the shocking betrayal of one of their core members -- and discover an imprisoned hero readers have clamored to see since this series was announced! The red-hot writing team of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and artistic legend Dale Eaglesham continue their highly-anticipated resurrection of one of Marvel's most beloved super hero teams in a story that absolutely cannot be missed!
I picked up issue #1 at the shop last week, but I haven't had time to read it. I have, however, read the preview of it online, and it looked like everything that's good about the writing duo of Van Lente and Pak: good action, good humor and good story. Since this maxi-series is only eight issues, I'm largely committed to the whole run regardless, but it doesn't look like I'll have much trouble wanting to get the rest of this series.

B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth — Monsters #1
- Written by Mike Mignola & John Arcudi
- Art by Tyler Crook
- Colors by Dave Stewart
- Cover by Ryan Sook
- Variant Cover by Francesco Francavilla
While the Bureau's off fighting giant bat-eared beasts in Texas, Liz Sherman is kicking hillbilly ass in a trailer park!
I have so much Hellboy and B.P.R.D.-related stuff to catch up on, it's not funny. While I probably won't have room for this (even though it's only a two-issue mini), and I probably want to just go ahead and pick up all of this stuff in trades (for the nice shelf impact, and since I have tons of back material to slog through), I'm still considering it for two reasons: everything from Mignola's Hellboy world that I've read has been pure awesome; and I kinda really want to be able to own that Francavilla variant cover. Seriously, just look at it. It's that awesome.

DC Comics Presents: Batman – Gotham Noir
- Written by Ed Brubaker
- Art by Sean Phillips & Scott McDaniel
- Cover by Sean Phillips
Don't miss this Elseworlds set in a stylish Gotham City straight out of classic mystery films, starring a down-on-his luck cop called Jim Gordon and the mysterious Bat! Plus, from BATMAN #604, The Dark Knight returns to Crime Alley for an encounter with Catwoman!
This could be all kinds of awesome or it could be forgettable. I'm not sure that I'll get the chance to find out (this month's going to be a busy one), but I'll at least take a look at the shop.
Status: In Consideration.
Detective Comics #879
- Written by Scott Snyder
- Art by Jock & Francesco Francavilla
- Cover by Francesco Francavilla
For years, Jim Gordon has been tormented by the possibility that his son, James Jr., might be a killer. Tonight, he'll get the answers he's been after. But is the truth about James even darker than the Commissioner, or even Batman, could have guessed?
I can't say how much I have enjoyed every issue of Scott Snyder's run on Detective Comics. That goes even moreso for the Jim Gordon-centered issues (and backups). (Side note: I'm not sure if the solicit's correct; the cover only lists Francavilla on art.)

Dollhouse: Epitaphs #1
- Written by Andrew Chambliss, Maurissa Tancharoen & Jed Whedon
- Pencils by Cliff Richards
- Inks by Andy Owens
- Colors by Michelle Madsen
- Cover by Phil Noto
- Variant Cover by Fiona Staples
The fight for free will starts now!
Alpha was the perfect product of Rossum Corporation's mind-altering technology, until he snapped, burdened by the dozens of personalities they'd downloaded into his brain. Now the technology has gone viral, turning the entire population into murderous automatons, and it's up to the psychotic Alpha and a small group of survivors to save mankind.
I have not actually seen the show, so I don't really know if this is something I'll want or not. It'll probably end up being a trade-wait for me, anyway. But, I'm not often disappointed by Joss Whedon's creations, so hopefully I can catch up soon and see if this is worthwhile.
Status: Of Interest.
FF #6
- Written by Jonathan Hickman
- Pencils by Greg Tocchini
- Cover by Mark Bagley
The Return of the King.
Black Bolt is back and is determined to reclaim his throne.
Holy. Crap. Black Bolt. The Inhumans are one of my favorite groups, and Black Bolt is probably my favorite Inhuman. I am so pumped for this.

Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #3
- Written by Mark Andrew Smith
- Art & Cover by Armand Villavert
The Skull Brothers pay their mother a visit in a maximum-security prison where villains keep the worst of their own kind; those who have turned on other villains. But, whose side are the Skulls really on? The delicate armistice between superheroes and villains is threatened and nothing is as it seems.
I picked up the first two issues of this at the shop this past week but (you guessed it) haven't had time to read them. I've read the intro from the first book (the origin story) and flipped through the rest, and it looks really good. Tons of fun. I'm already eager for more.

Red Robin #25
- Written by Fabian Nicieza
- Art & Cover by Marcus To & Ray McCarthy
If he's going to avoid a fight against a psycho Super-Villain, end the 7 Days of Death, win the Assassination Tournament and discover ancient knowledge over life and death, Red Robin will have to survive a final battle against one of the world's deadliest assassins. Her name? Cassandra Cain!
This book has been so good, I'm so sad this is the penultimate issue. I'm an issue behind in my reading, so I can't say much else, except Cass!

The Red Wing #1
- Written by Jonathan Hickman
- Art & Cover by Nick Pitarra & Rachelle Rosenberg
“LEARNING TO FLY”
To stay alive in the future, the best fighter pilots in the world not only have to perfect their skills and master their aircraft, they also have to know how to travel through time.
Brought to you by award winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and possibly the best new talent of the year, NICK PITARRA, the Red Wing is the story of the greatest battle in the history of the history of three worlds.
Jonathan Hickman? Creator-owned? Oh yeah, definitely getting this one. The only dilemma is over having all of his stuff in trades (they look so nice on the shelf) vs supporting creator-owned works in singles (and getting it sooner). I think the latter's going to win out.

The Unwritten #27
- Written by Mike Carey
- Art by Peter Gross & Vince Locke
- Cover by Yuko Shimizu
"On to Genesis," part 1 of 3. Armed with his father's journals, Tom Taylor begins a journey across the United States that also takes him into the past – to the Golden Age of a new artistic medium and the birth of a new type of hero. But following in Wilson's footsteps creates dangerous echoes.
I'm an issue behind with this one, too. Still, haven't seen a misstep here yet, and until I do I'm recommending this out of hand.
