Weekly Previews for July 20, 2011

Previews time again! Things are a bit calmer this week. I'm looking at less books this week than were definite buys last week, so maybe I'll be able to afford my next trip to the shop. Let's get on with it, then!

Batman: Gates of Gotham #3 (of 5)

  • Written by Scott Snyder & Kyle Higgins
  • Art & Cover by Trevor McCarthy

It's Batman and Red Robin vs. The Architect as the villain tears through Gotham City's first families! Plus, who is Nicholas Anders? The team continues to investigate the mysterious man from turn-of-the twentieth-century Gotham, but what they find may change everything they know about the city itself!

Other than the faces not looking right, I have zero complaints about this book. Very interesting and well written, and — other than the aforementioned problem — the art is nice and fits the book. Also, I love these covers.

Daredevil #1

  • Written by Mark Waid
  • Pencils by Paolo Manuel Rivera & Marcos Martin
  • Cover by Paolo Rivera
  • Variant Covers by John Romita Sr., Neal Adams, Marcos Martin

THIS SUMMER, THE DEVIL IS REBORN. RENEWED. RESSURECTED.

With new enemies, new friends…and that same old “grinnin’ in the face of hell” attitude, The Man Without Fear is back in a double-sized first issue and leading with his face! Mark Waid (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Irredeemable, RUSE) joins neo-legendary artists Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin for a new spin on Daredevil that will leave you gasping for air. Having turned his world upside over the past several years, Matt Murdock realizes that justice may not be blind to his past and villains may not be the only ones looking for answers. Bring it on. If Matt Murdock could see what he was doing…he’d be terrified.

I'm not sure how interested I am in this book. I like Daredevil but have little background in the character. I haven't even read Frank Miller's run, let alone any others. But, it's a new start for the character and that is a seriously awesome cover.

DC Retroactive: Batman – The '70s

  • Written by Len Wein
  • Art & Cover by TBD

The 1970s was a pivotal decade for Batman, one in which he transitioned from TV's campy Caped Crusader into today's Dark Knight Detective!

Now, legendary scribe Len Wein (DC UNIVERSE: LEGACIES) tells a never-before-revealed tale from this era in a brand-new story!

Plus: Following the 26-page lead story is a classic tale originally published in the '70s, also written by Len Wein!

Interesting idea. I'm not sure if this is worth it (there's very little to go on in the solicit), but it's worth a look.

Fear Itself: FF #1

  • Written by Cullen Bunn
  • Pencils by Tom Grummett
  • Cover by Gabriele Dell’Otto

XXXX XXXXX...one of the most beloved heroes in the Marvel Universe…is now the willing avatar of the Serpent's malice--an engine of discord cutting an unstoppable path of destruction through the heart of New York City! How did the Serpent's Hammer seduce him so easily? Can the rest of the XXXXXXX stop him before he levels the entire city in the name of his dark master?

It's the FF. I don't know about the writer, and I'm not too sure I care about the whole Fear Itself thing (or the Fear Itself Thing), but … it's the FF. I'll take a look.

Status: In Consideration.

Herc #5

  • Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak
  • Pencils by Neil Edwards
  • Cover by Greg Horn

As the world descends into chaos around him, Herc and his unlikely myth-villain allies fight to save his new home of Brooklyn from being consumed by the fear being sown by the witchcraft of Hecate. Will Herc keep his wits and save the day, or will his newly depowered nature make him all the more susceptible to Hecate’s terrifying powers? It’s magic and mayhem of unprecedented levels in this thrilling new issue from Marvel "Foremen" Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente!

So I haven't been caring about Fear Itself, and this first arc is all about Fear Itself (though, not about the main title), but I'm not caring. It's done well, and it doesn't seem forced into a mold. I have been (and still am) eager to get each issue.

Sergio Aragones Funnies #1

  • Writing & Art by Sergio Aragones

Matt Groening proudly presents an all-new monthly series by the world's most famous and most honored cartoonist, Sergio Aragones! Each issue offers an assortment of autobiographical anecdotes, perplexing puzzles, slap-happy short stories, as well as Sergio's unique and hilarious pantomimes and gags. With this new series, the world's most beloved cartoonist continues to prove that humor is truly a universal language!

Might be fun, probably can't fit it into my budget this month.

X-Factor #222

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino
  • Cover by David Yardin

X-Factor headquarters is under siege! As the birth of Wolfsbane’s baby draws near, demonic forces pound at their door, desperate to steal the child away. How will X-Factor battle the supernatural? Salvation may just arrive in a very familiar form…

I always enjoy X-Factor. Seems like Peter David is starting to wrap up a few things in preparation for the Point One issue coming up, but it doesn't feel rushed or wrong, so that's good. I'm interested to see what happens with this baby.
