It's Tuesday already? My week's flown by. I've got a bit of a mixed bag this week. Some regulars, some extra stories about characters I follow, and some “other” books. Hit the jump to find out what it's all about.
One interesting note before we get to the main show: Image is releasing this week for $2.99, from what I can tell, the Free Comic Book Day issue of Super Dinosaur. Interesting.
And now… comics!
The Adventures of Dr. McNinja: Night Powers (TPB)
- Written by Chris Hastings and Benito Cereno
- Art by Chris Hastings & Les McClaine
- Cover by Carly Monardo
What's better than an evil unicorn motorcycle, monster gang wars, a tennis match against a god of destruction, and bandidos on velociraptors?
Yeah, we couldn't think of anything, either!
Award-winning cartoonist Chris Hastings teams up with Dark Horse Books to bring his smash-hit webcomic to print with the first three full-color story arcs of Dr. McNinja, as well as an exclusive-to-print story by Benito Cereno and Les McClaine.
It's another printed collection of a web comic for Dark Horse (Axe Cop being the other I know of). This time we get Dr. McNinja, the hilarious comic about an Irish ninja who forged his own path in the medical field against the wishes of his parents. They, of course, wanted him to go into the family business of being ninjas. It's very funny and very zany. Only the more recent stuff is in color — I'd love to see some of the first stories in print. Maybe if this does well…

Batman: Gates of Gotham #1
- Written by Scott Snyder & Kyle Higgins
- Art & Cover by Trevor McCarthy
- Variant Cover by Dustin Nguyen
When a mystery as old as Gotham City itself surfaces, Batman assembles a team of his greatest detectives – including Red Robin, Owlman, I-Ching and others – to investigate this startling new enigma. As clues are discovered and the mystery deepens, Batman's team soon finds itself on a journey that explores different eras in Gotham's history and touches upon notable Gotham families including the Waynes, Kanes, and Elliotts.
This miniseries spins out of recent events in the Batman titles and sets the stage for several exciting storylines in 2011. Additionally, this limited series touches upon mysterious story elements introduced in Grant Morrison's RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. Featuring many exciting Batman Family guest stars!
This sounds really interesting for a few reasons. First, it has Batman in it. (Which one? I'll take either.) Second, it has Red Robin in it. And third, it's co-written by Scott Snyder who has been rocking Detective Comics lately. It's basically a Bat-family mini-event, and I'm really hoping it'll be good. Because I love Batman.

Booster Gold #44
- Written by Dan Jurgens
- Art & Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund
Dan Jurgens returns to BOOSTER GOLD just in time for this FLASHPOINT prelude. Booster Gold returns to Rip Hunter's lab after the events of TIME MASTERS and finds that this world isn't the same one he left behind.
I really enjoyed Time Masters: Vanishing Point. It was fun, mostly well-written, and I really liked the flashbacks (to the future!) to Rip Hunter's youth. …and then they made it into a Flashpoint lead-in. That was not what I bought into. Yet… I did quite enjoy it — 52 and that series made me really interested in Booster Gold (also Rip Hunter). So, I'm intrigued. And so, I may see about this and Flashpoint (especially after reading a favorable review of the latter). Also, I'm really loving that cover.

Herc #3
- Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
- Pencils by Neil Edwards
- Cover by Chris Stevens
FEAR ITSELF has made its way to Hercules’ home turf! Stripped of his powers, Herc must change everything he knows about being a hero to win the day. But against an army of monsters and super villains, what chance does a mere mortal have? Find out when Herc shows the world the true measure of a superhero in Herc #3!
I haven't seen #2: my shop was out when I went at the beginning of the month. So my only relevant comment is that I hope the tie-in status of this doesn't hurt the story.

Pinocchio (HC)
- Writing & Art by Winshluss
Winner of the Grand Prise at France's Angouleme Comics Festival in 2009. In this dark rendition, a greedy Geppetto builds Pinocchio as a metallic weapon of war, while Jiminy Cockroach is a homeless squatter living the good life in Pinocchio's skull. Exquisite drawings by celebrated cartoonist Winshluss bring to life a rich tale of greedy fools, lust, sadness, redemption, and hope. Winshluss has perfected the wordless comic with artwork primarily done in pen and ink, and watercolor which switches to paint for larger splash panels.
I really love the story of Pinocchio. The original, that is. It's nothing like the popular, Disney version. It's very wacky, at times much darker, and a whole lot of fun. (I recommend reading it sometime.) This version seems to be more akin to that, and I'm all for it. The cover's beautiful, so I have high hopes for the interior art. Also intriguing is that it's wordless.

X-Factor #219
- Written by Peter David
- Pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino
- Cover by David Yardin
The SCARs -- the deadliest team of women around -- are out to frame the Black Cat for murder. But they're not the only ones with homicide on their mind, because a furious Monet is out for blood on behalf of her teammate who was gunned down. Can X-Factor stop the elegant Ms. St. Croix from killing one of their deadliest foes...and do they even want to?
I'm an issue behind in my reading, so I'm not sure if Guido made it or not, but I'm all for Monet kicking butt, and the SCARs intrigue me.
