Weekly Previews for June 1, 2011

I'll be at HeroesCon this weekend, but first comes Wednesday, and that means new comics. And before that is Tuesday which means Previews! The Flashpoint tie-ins start in full-swing this week, but I'm more looking forward to the start of the second volume of S.H.I.E.L.D. Keep reading to see what else is in store for this week.

Flashpoint #2

  • Written by Geoff Johns
  • Art & Cover by Andy Kubert & Sandra Hope

The world-changing miniseries continues! Where are the World's Greatest Super Heroes? Barry Allen is on a mission to find out or die trying – and that may be what's happening as he tries to make lightning strike twice! Meanwhile, around the submerged Paris, the pirate Deathstroke confronts Emperor Aquaman!

Hmm… After reading a review of the first issue of this year's Big Event from DC, I have to say, I'm intrigued. I like the sort-of Elseworlds feel, and I especially like that Bruce's father, not Bruce himself, survived that night so long ago to become and even moodier, broodier Batman. Very good idea and lots of potential. My only points against picking this series up: I have a lot of comics on my pull list as it is (and it'll get a little bigger in the next couple of months with the return of Buffy comics); there are a million tie-ins, at least some of which I'll want to get in conjunction; and the last Big Event by Geoff Johns (which I kept up with but did not read) seemed to fizzle at the end (and labored in the middle). But — I remain intrigued enough to see if it'll work for me.

Flashpoint: Batman — Knight of Vengeance #1

  • Written by Brian Azzarello
  • Art by Eduardo Risso
  • Cover by Dave Johnson

FLASH FACT! He spends his days running Wayne Casinos!

I kind of can't stand those “FLASH FACT!” solicits. But, more to the point, I love Batman and pretty much everyone connected to him. So I love the idea of his father surviving Joe Chill's assault to become Batman, enough so that even if I don't end up getting the main Flashpoint series (see above), I may get these three issues.

Herc #4

  • Written by Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Neil Edwards
  • Cover by Michael Kaluta

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN

As FEAR ITSELF continues to rage across the Marvel Universe, escaped super villains make their way to Brooklyn where they are faced only by...not Herc? A villain not seen since the days of "Dark Reign" and accidentally resurrected by Herc during "Chaos War" has arisen to challenge Herc's role as the borough's protector -- but what sinister purpose lies behind his so-called heroism? Swords and sorcery clash in the heart of modern-day New York City!

My shop was out of this the last time I went, and this is the second issue this month, so I'm three issues behind at this point. I'm pretty sure I'll stick through this far based on good will alone, though, so there you have it.

(By the way, I love love love that cover. The lines are great and it's a fun shot, but the colors are what really draw me in.)

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 (Volume 2)

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Dustin Weaver
  • Cover by Gerald Parel
  • Historical Variant Cover by Dustin Weaver

The most acclaimed book of 2010 is back in 2011! The second volume of S.H.I.E.L.D. has arrived and Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR) and Dustin Weaver (X-MEN) are making the second volume of S.H.I.E.L.D. even better than the first! In this issue, the secret history of Michelangelo. He has been pulling the strings for years and is now becoming the prime mover. Can he keep Da Vinci and Newton from killing each other and destroying the Brotherhood of the Shield? Don’t miss this new start of the book that everyone is talking about!

I have really been loving this book, and it gets more interesting with each issue. Last month's Infinity issue gave some good insights into the major characters. I can't wait to see what's in store for Volume 2.

Who is Jake Ellis? #4

  • Written by Nathan Edmondson
  • Art & Cover by Tonci Zonjic

CHAPTER FOUR

Does Jon have what it takes to find the truth? Can Jake push him to do the unmentionable? And what lies southward, in the sand and beneath the sun?

It's been a while since we've had an issue of Who is Jake Ellis? I guess that has to do with the change from a five-issue mini to — what, a dozen or more issues? In a way I'm a little bummed this got expanded. I picked it up in part because it wouldn't be a huge commitment and now it will be. But, more of a good thing can't be that bad, huh? And it's been very good.

X-Factor #220

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Paul Davidson
  • Cover by David Yardin

“Forgive Me, Father, For I Have KILLED!”

Hoping to be absolved of recently committed sins before she gives birth, Wolfsbane goes to confess…but it isn’t forgiveness that awaits her. In fact, she’s going to have to face her demons head on. Literally! (Oh, and that baby she’s carrying? Turns out that it’s not quite what she expected either.) The next X-citing chapter of X-FACTOR begins here!

Two issues in a month means I don't know what happened last issue, so I'll comment instead on (spoiler warning?) Guido's non-death. It looked like one of those “Oh, look, he didn't really die because we like to fake you out but we can't really kill characters or you'll stop reading — I mean, who wants to read about new things?” sort of moments. And it was, but it was used well because it was also another hint at what Layla really is. The hint is, of course, in the form of a question (Did she really make the gunshot wound, etc. go away like it never happened? If so, why did she do it? And, for that matter, what are her real aims?). But it made a deus ex machina interesting and even necessary.
