Weekly Previews for February 2, 2011

Small week for me, as this week's Previews attest. Though there are several items of milder interest this week. Read on to see what's what.

Firstly, I made a special trip to the LCS last week specifically because of this week's Fantastic Four #587 with the spoiler-variant cover. I only picked that one issue up, and we'll be making our monthly trek on Wednesday (barring potential family things), but I did not want to have that spoiled for me. I've invested too much in that story.

New beginnings this week: DC Universe Online Legends #1, a bi-weekly, 26-issue comic tied to the DCU Online game. Sounds like tons of action — and sounds like the plot of a video game — but I think I'd prefer something a little less blockbuster movie for $6 a month. Maybe something to check out when it's collected, though.

IDW's also starting something new this week, with the first of their “zombies from another dimension tie all these other dimensions together, seriously, oh fine we just wanted to have a line-wide event and this is the only thing we could come up with — zombies are still in, right?” issues: Transformers: Infestation #1. You may think I think this is silly, but what's silliest to me is that zombies are supposed to be a threat against the F-ing Transformers. Really?

Also new this month is the first of Marvel's “Point One” issues: Invincible Iron Man #500.1. These are meant to be jumping-on points for new readers, and as long as they're done by the actual creative team on the book and are one-and-dones they may be worthwhile, but otherwise they're just a throwaway or an extra issue that doesn't get a real numbering — not that Marvel cares about actual numberings. As for this one, I'm not currently interested enough in Iron Man to bother with it. Plus, I really don't have the budget to jump on to a million titles right now, and I know I would.

And, because I love her so much, a little shout-out to the new volume of Little Lulu that's out this week, Little Lulu vol. 26: Feud & other stories. Pick up any one of these and you won't be sorry.

And now, for the much-shorter-than-that Previews!

Daytripper (TPB)

  • Written by Gabriel Bá & Fábio Moon
  • Art by Fábio Moon & Gabriel Bá
  • Cover by Gabriel Bá

What are the most important days of your life? Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá answer that question in the critical and commercial hit series that took the industry by storm, winning praise from such comics veterans as Terry Moore, Craig Thompson and Jeff Smith. Follow aspiring writer Brás de Oliva Domingos as each chapter of DAYTRIPPER peers in at a completely different moment in his life. Moon and Bá tell a beautifully lyrical tale chronicling Domingos's entire existence – from his loves to his deaths and all the possibilities in between. Introduction by Craig Thompson (Blankets).

Okay, so apparently I should've already read this. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Daytripper, but I never felt it needed to push something else out of my monthly take, but maybe I'll bite on the trade. It does look really interesting.

Status: In Consideration.

Time Masters: Vanishing Point #6

  • Written by Dan Jurgens
  • Art & Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund

Finding Bruce Wayne seems like a trivial pursuit compared to the horrors that the Time Masters stumble upon concerning 2011 and the entire DC Universe! How far has Reverse-Flash gone this time in his manipulations of the time-stream?! Do NOT miss this peek at what lies ahead for the DCU!

Well, the final issue has finally arrived and I'm really not as excited as I wish I was. I found out about this because of Return of Bruce Wayne; bought it because of Booster Gold, Rip Hunter and their portrayals in 52; fell in love with it because of the flashbacks of Rip & Booster and the fun story by Dan Jurgens; grew impatient with it because the story started spinning its wheels and, for a story that grew out of Bruce Wayne's return, is now ending three months after said return; and finally became up in the air about it because it's gotten more fun again and still has great Rip & Booster moments. So, we'll see how this goes, and find out if I feel jaded that this has become a teaser for this year's Event (or maybe get excited about it? maybe?) or can just enjoy a good wrap-up to what would've been a great four- or five-issue mini (instead of the six it is).

Status: Buying It.

Ultimate Comics Thor #4

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils & Cover by Carlos Pacheco

How does a man become a God? The epic origin of the God of Thunder comes to a close as Thor discovers the mystery of his past. Masterminds Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco bring you the thrilling conclusion of one of the most talked about series… and you don’t want to miss it!

This, on the other hand (see Time Masters entry above), has been tons of fun all the way through and if anything seems too short. I'm not really sure how Jonathan Hickman will wrap everything up in this one issue, but really, as long as it still manages to make Ragnarok, is-he-crazy-or-is-he-Thor guy, a Nazi-Frost Giant team-up, and Thor kickin' butt all work together — wait, is that Thor fighting the Hulk on the cover? Okay, throw that one in there, too — it's gonna be good.

Status: Buying It.

Seriously, that's all for this week. Anyone else have a heavier take this week?
