Weekly Previews for January 26, 2011

Another major week in the Previews, this time with the conclusion of “Three” in Fantastic Four. In other endings: the first arc of Scott Snyder's Detective Comics run ends this week; and the end of and end comes with the final issue of Chaos War, ending not only that title but Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente's über-story about Hercules and Amadeus Cho as well. That's going to be a hard spot to fill for me — I'm not sure what comics are out there with such humor and emotion all together. And the sound effects will be sorely missed.

A couple of minor notes before we get to the Previews: Angel: Illyria #3 is out this week (I'll probably get the trade when that comes out); and the last of the Chaos War tie-ins (unless you count the aftermath-related issue of Incredible Hulks also out this week), Chaos War X-Men #2 is released this week. I haven't gotten any of the tie-ins because, frankly, the main title hasn't gotten me excited enough to want to read some related things that ultimately don't matter. Oh well, on to the Previews!

Age of X: Alpha #1

  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Pencils by Mirco Pierfederici, Paul Davidson, Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Harvey Tolibao & Carlo Barberi
  • Cover by Chris Bachalo

Mutantkind’s final war starts here.

If you don’t know which side you’re on, check your DNA.

This is the start of the next Big Thing in the world of the X-Men. It's an alternate reality that will be shown to connect to the 616 universe somehow later on. Not something I'd just pick up, but the new takes on some characters look interesting enough to check this out in a trade later on, maybe.

Status: Of Interest.

Angel #41

  • Written by David Tischman & Mariah Huehner
  • Art by Elena Casagrande
  • Cover by Jenny Frison & Elena Casagrande

Angel quickly adapts to his new situation, only to discover that Wolfram & Hart and James are the least of his worries, as someone unexpected decides it’s time to stop playing nice. Meanwhile, Connor and the gang are under attack at the new headquarters from yet another threat…

I'm way behind on reading Angel again. I read it with my wife, so we need to find a time to read together, which doesn't happen as often as it needs to to keep up. But, with only four issues left, of course I'm seeing it out to the end.

Chaos War #5

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Khoi Pham
  • Cover by Brandon Peterson

THIS IS IT!! THE MARVEL UNIVERSE'S LAST STAND! The Chaos King unleashes his ultimate attack against reality as we know it -- and our survival depends on a boy, his god, and their ragtag band of allies: The Mighty Thor! The Incredible Hulks! The Dead (and Living?) Avengers! The X-Men! Alpha Flight! But are they enough to stand against THE ANTI-ETERNITY ... The force that seeks to negate all existence itself? In this issue, the universe dies and everyone wins! What?

This mini-event has been much weaker than Pak and Van Lente's normal output for The Incredible Hercules and the minis that have followed. It hasn't been bad, but it's been rather average with splashes of past brilliance here and there. With any luck, they've been holding out for this last issue. If not, it'll make the end of this great Herc run even sadder for me.

Detective Comics #873

  • Written by Scott Snyder
  • Art & Cover by Jock

Now at the mercy of the deadly Mirror House, Dick Grayson must fight for his life against one of Gotham City's oldest and most powerful evils!. Be here for the shocking conclusion to "The Black Mirror," the first arc by the highly anticipated new creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Jock!

Still haven't gotten the first issue of this run (having to wait until my shop gets more in — I completely forgot to add this to my pull list before Scott Snyder's run started), so I haven't read any more than the previews that've been in the other Bat-books of this arc that ends with this issue. Looks good, though, and I've been hearing great things about it, so….

Fantastic Four #587

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Steve Epting
  • Cover by Alan Davis

Apparently there's no solicit for this. But does it really need more than that cover to tell you what it's about? This is the end of “Three” where one of the Fantastic Four will die. I've been loving just about every moment of Hickman's run, and this arc has been as exceptional as the rest. He's set up a situation where all four are equally in immediate danger, and I both dread and cannot wait to see how it all turns out.

The Last Unicorn (HC)

  • Written by Peter S. Beagle & Peter Gillis
  • Art & Cover by Renae DeLiz

Whimsical. Lyrical. Poignant. Adapted for the first time from the acclaimed and beloved novel by Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn is a tale for any age about the wonders of magic, the power of love, and the tragedy of loss. The unicorn, alone in her enchanted wood, discovers that she may be the last of her kind. Reluctant at first, she sets out on a journey to find her fellow unicorns, even if it means facing the terrifying anger of the Red Bull and the malignant evil of the king who wields his power. Adapted by Peter B. Gillis and lushly illustrated by Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon.

I have not actually read the book this is based on, but my friend has been getting the single issues, and they are gorgeous. I probably won't get this in hardcover, but when the trade comes out it's going on my “To Buy” list.

Status: In Consideration.

The Question: Pipeline (TPB)

  • Written by Greg Rucka
  • Art & Cover by Cully Hamner

Greg Rucka returns to write the adventures of Renee Montoya – the character he helped transform into The Question – as a gun-running scheme threatens Gotham City in stories from DETECTIVE COMICS #854-863. Features the art of Cully Hamner (RED)!

I'm not buying this, as I already have it from the issues of Detective Comics in which it was a backup, but if you don't have those, buy this trade. I've fallen in love with Renee Montoya thanks to Greg Rucka, largely from reading 52 and this story. And Cully Hamner's art is very nice here.

Status: Of Interest.

That's it for me for this week. What's everyone else excited about?
