The last of the “Road Home” books are out this week, along with the newest Time Masters: Vanishing Point. But Bruce Wayne isn't the real highlight this week. The second part of “Three” from Fantastic Four comes out this week, and I'm very excited. That's not all, though. Read on to see those and the rest of what I'll be looking at from this week's releases.
Angel #38
- Written by Bill Willingham
- Backup Written by Bill Williams
- Art by Elena Casagrande
- Cover by Jenny Frison
Death. Destruction. Destiny. None of these can compare with the betrayal Team Angel is about to face, the old enemy that’s about to re-surface, and the epic showdown Angel and Connor are going to have to tackle together. And someone other than the readers finally wonders, just what the hell is really up with Spike?
I am criminally behind in my reading. Maybe I'll have read the past two issues by the time I go to the shop to get this one.
Bruce Wayne — The Road Home: Oracle
- Written by Marc Andreyko
- Art by Agustin Padilla
- Cover by Shane Davis
Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne have long been allies and friends, acting as Gotham City's primary defenders. Their reunion is sure to have lasting effects on Barbara's role as Oracle and the other Birds of Prey.
As with all of these “Road Home” issues, I'll at least take a look at this one. I quite like Oracle, but I'm not as up-to-date on her relationship with Bruce Wayne as I could be, and I know nothing of the writer. Add to that that there's 1.8 billion Bat-comics out this month, and we'll see how it goes.
Bruce Wayne — The Road Home: Ra's al Ghul
- Written by Fabian Nicieza
- Cover by Shane Davis
When Ra's al Ghul first heard that Bruce Wayne had died, he refused to believe it. Now The Demon's Head is proven right as his longtime arch enemy returns and the villain's master plan can continue in earnest…
I couldn't find any info about who the artist for this is. Even so, I'll probably get this one, as it's written by Fabian Nicieza, who's done an awesome job so far with Red Robin; and it's about Ra's al Ghul, who I really enjoyed in Chis Yost's run on that same book.
Detective Comics #870
- Written by David Hine
- Art by Scott McDaniel & Andy Owens
- Cover by Peter Nguyen
The battle lines have been drawn. The insane Impostor Joker will lead his army of Jokerz against the imposing Impostor Batman and his Guardian Bats – and the battleground will be the Gotham City World's Fair. The only hope Gotham has is The Dark Knight himself, but can even Batman stop both Impostors before more blood is shed? All will be revealed, including the mystery behind the Impostors, in this shocking and horrifying conclusion to "Batman: Impostors"!
I've come to the conclusion that I should've dropped Detective Comics until Scott Snyder started writing. This story showed some promise, but not until the second issue, and that was more or less dropped in the last issue. Maybe we'll luck out and the even-numbered issues will be good — at least that would give a good conclusion.
Doomwar (HC)
- Written by Jonathan Maberry
- Pencils by Scott Eaton & Will Conrad
- Inks by Robert Campanella, Andy Lanning & Jim Lee
- Colors by Jean-Francois Beaulieu & Carlos Franco
- Covers by John Romita Jr.
Wakanda has been conquered, its Vibranium reserves plundered. Storm faces execution in the next 48 hours. And Dr. Doom stands triumphant. It will take the combined forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the two Black Panthers to stand against him. A war has begun that will pit the world's most relentless super-villain against a collection of the world's most powerful super heroes -- one that will span the globe, offering twists and turns and surprise players (hello, Deadpool!) that neither side will see coming. Collecting DOOMWAR #1-6.
I heard about and seen some really good things from this limited series. Doom is one of my favorite villains, and he's pure Doom here, from what I've seen. I probably won't be picking this up anytime soon (and may wait for the softcover trade), but I'll definitely be getting this. Christmas present, anyone?
Fantastic Four #584
- Written by Jonathan Hickman
- Pencils & Inks by Steve Epting
- Colors by Paul Mounts
- Cover by Alan Davis
It's the return of Galactus, a trip to Nu-World, the Old Kings of Atlantis and Namor, the all-new Yancy Street Gang, and the day the Thing becomes human again. Join Jonathan Hickman and superstar artist Steve Epting in THREE, part 2: 'Congratulations, Mr. Grimm...You're Human Again.'
I thought the first issue of “Three” was excellent, and I'm really excited to see this one. It looks like there's a lot packed into this issue; it seems like Hickman is really starting to ramp things up. And that's Alan Davis's best cover since the Annihilus one.
Secret Avengers #6
- Written by Ed Brubaker
- Pencils by Mike Deodato & Marko Djurdjevic
- Inks by Mike Deodato
- Colors by Rainier Beredo
- Lettering by David M. A. Lanphear
- Cover by Marko Djurdjevic
Everybody is Kung Fu fighting... as the Secret Avengers descend into the depths of Marvel's darkest corners on a new case that brings them face to face with a Master of Kung Fu and many forces of evil. Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato bring you another twisted tale of Marvel's most popular new Avengers team.
This would've been a great time to drop this book. There are a million Bat-books out this month, including the start of the Knight and Squire mini, and a bunch of other things that look interesting. But…. The last issue was good and brought back a lot of the promise of the opening issue. I'll take a look and see if that sticks around. If so, I'll probably stick around, too.
Teen Titans #88
- Written by J.T. Krul
- Art & Cover by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood
It's here! A new day dawns for the Teen Titans, brought to you by the dynamic duo of J.T. Krul (GREEN ARROW, BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS) and Nicola Scott (WONDER WOMAN, SECRET SIX)! Packed with action, steeped in emotion and featuring your favorite heroes, TEEN TITANS is ready to explode off the racks!
Starting right here, the team finds itself pushed in new directions and brought to new heights while also rediscovering its roots. With the rise of a mysterious new threat called the Feral Boys, Superboy, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Raven, Beast Boy and the newly returned Ravager will have the chance to rebuild their camaraderie in the face of all that might endanger it. But if they discover the truth behind the Feral Boys, will they be able to stand together to face it? Find out here as the new era of the Teen Titans begins in this perfect jumping-on-point issue!
The Teen Titans animated series (which my family's been watching on DVD a lot lately) has gotten me hooked on Teen Titans. Yes, this is a mostly different cast, and yes, that means I should probably read the Wolfman-Perez run instead, but I've got to take a look. I heard the previous writer was horrible, so this would be the time to check it out. Then again, do I need yet another ongoing series to burst my comics budget? We'll see.
Time Masters: Vanishing Point #4
- Written by Dan Jurgens
- Art & Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund
"The Search for The Batman" continues! The Time Masters are tossed through a continually disrupted time stream as the devastation at Vanishing Point takes them further and further off the trail of the missing Bruce Wayne!
I was disappointed with the last issue. This series had really surprised me and quickly turned into one of my favorite books. Last month's issue was far below that level of quality. Let's hope it was just a misstep, and that this issue gets back on track.
xkcd: volume 0
- Writing & Art by Randall Munroe
xkcd: volume 0 is the first xkcd book! It features selections from the first 600 comics, including various author and fan favorites. It was lovingly assembled from high-resolution original scans of the comics (the mouseover text is discreetly included), and features a lot of doodles, notes, and puzzles in the margins.
The book is published by BreadPig, a company founded by my friend Alexis, and their portion of the profits will go to build a school in Laos through the charity Room to Read.
Somehow I missed that this has been out for a long time, but my LCS is just getting it in. This is one of my favorite web-comics, and part of the proceeds go to charity — what's not to love?
