Weekly Previews for September 28, 2011

I'm a little late with the Previews this week, but at least it's still Wednesday. This is the weakest week for DC's New 52, with only one book even worth a look, as far as I'm concerned. But, Marvel's making up for it with several books, including the second issue of Warren Ellis's run on Secret Avengers. See that and more after the jump.

Angel and Faith #2

  • Written by Christos Gage
  • Art by Rebekah Isaacs
  • Colors by Dan Jackson
  • Cover by Steve Morris
  • Variant Cover by Rebekah Isaacs

Following some bad—many would say unforgivable—choices as Twilight, Angel needed to hide away and wallow in his guilt. But with a little TLC—courtesy of his only remaining ally, Faith, Angel is back to fighting the good fight and taking demons down one by one. With the Watcher files at their disposal, Angel comes up with the ultimate plan for redemption.

Here I go again: I'm already behind on my Angel reading. So, I have #1, but I haven't read #1. Still, I've heard good things about it, and seriously, there's no way I'm not getting this.

Annihilators: Earthfall #1

  • Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
  • Pencils by Tan Eng Huat & Timothy Green II
  • Cover by John Tyler Christopher

MARVEL’S COSMIC HEAVY HITTERS COME TO EARTH—AND FIGHT THE AVENGERS! What has brought Gladiator, Quasar, Ronan, Ikon and Beta-Ray Bill to our planet…and why are they at odds with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? All this, plus each issue will feature a five-page chapter of an all-new, all-hilarious Rocket Raccoon & Groot story!

I'm just starting to get into Marvel's cosmic books, so it's all on a strictly trade wait basis right now. Still, I'm interested.

Dorothy & The Wizard in Oz #1

  • Written by Eric Shanower
  • Pencils & Cover by Skottie Young

The great 1906 San Francisco earthquake swallows Dorothy alive—no kidding! It also swallows Dorothy’s kitten Eureka, Dorothy’s cousin Zeb, and his horse Jim. They’re trapped underground in a strange land of glass where everyone can walk on air. Time for the Wizard of Oz to come to the rescue! Eisner award winners Eric Shanower and Skottie Young continue to delight audiences of all ages! Find out why these books are one of the best Oz adaptations yet.

This is another one I'm trade waiting, but for a different reason. I really want these Oz books in nice, big hardcovers: that Skottie Young art is so nice (and I'm a big Oz fan).

FF #9

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Steve Epting
  • Cover by Daniel Acuña

This month in the FF, the EVIL Future Foundation is caught in the middle of the War of Four Cities. Watch as the war expands to encompass the entire Marvel Universe.

Still loving the ol' FF. Last issue got back to the action and was all the better for it. This should be continuing that, so I'm all for it.

The Flash #1

  • Written by Francis Manapul & Brian Buccellato
  • Art & Cover by Francis Manapul
  • Variant Cover by Ivan Reis & Tim Townsend

The Fastest Man Alive returns to his own monthly series from the writer/artist team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato! The Flash knows he can’t be everywhere at once, but what happens when he faces an all-new villain who really can! As if that’s not bad enough, this villain is a close friend!

My interest in this (the only New 52 book that holds any interest for me this week) lies more or less solely in Francis Manapul's art. Will the story be as good, and will his split writing/art duties make the art suffer? Wait and see, wait and see. Still, this is currently being passed over as my comics budget is already stretched pretty thin.

Herc #8

  • Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak
  • Pencils by June Brigman
  • Covers by Carlo Pagulayan

SPIDER-ISLAND TIE IN!

You loved it when Herc dressed up as Thor, but can you handle the senses-shattering debut of... THE INCREDIBLE SPIDER-HERC?!?! And versus… THE X-MEN??? Though he is the newly self-appointed protector of Brooklyn, when a rash of unusual occurrences begin breaking out in Manhattan, Hercules finds himself "infested" with Spider-Powers of his own. Unfortunately, our web-slinging former demigod soon finds himself under the thrall of the insidious intelligence behind Spider Island and in a duel to the death against fellow champions The X-Men. Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente join up with artist June Brigman to deliver a pulse-pounding, wall-crawling [!!!] adventure with Marvel’s lovable lug, HERC!

Herc double-ships this month, so I'm an issue behind. It also means Marvel's solicit covers both issues, so I can't even speak to what this issue is supposed to be about. But, this should be fun.

Secret Avengers #17

  • Written by Warren Ellis
  • Pencils by Kev Walker
  • Cover by John Cassaday

MI:13 receives intelligence that people are being abducted from villages in the former Yugoslavian region -- but the British government refuses to act on it. Secret dangers summon Secret Avengers, but even the added strength of War Machine and Valkyrie are not going to prepare them for the next level in bioterror...

The last issue was a breath of fresh air. You hardly ever see one-and-done issues anymore. Well, it was that and it was a completely fun ride, to boot. I'm looking for more of the same here.
