Weekly Previews for June 15, 2011

Life has gotten in the way of the promptness of this week's Previews, but better late than never. It's a pretty small week for me (or this would be even later), but I'm pretty excited about these books. Read on to see what they are.

Alpha Flight #1

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Dale Eaglesham
  • Cover by Phil Jimenez

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN

A FEAR ITSELF maxi-series spinoff! Do you fear…your country turning on you? Alpha Flight has long been the protector of an entire nation…but what happens when that nation needs to be protected from itself? New York Times best-selling authors Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, along with red-hot artist Dale Eaglesham, bring back the team you demanded—the original Alpha Flight! Sasquatch, Snowbird, Northstar and Aurora have been joined by their revived allies Guardian, Vindicator, Shaman, and Marrina as the paragons and protectors of an entire nation. But as FEAR ITSELF takes over, their own country turns on the Flight and brands them traitors for the shocking actions of one of their closest allies. As the borders close and an entire nation hunts them down, will the newly reunited Alpha Flight survive?

I wasn't sure about this one — my only history with Alpha Flight is the little I've seen them in their early appearances in X-Men, and I didn't get to look at the Point One issue last time I was in the shop — but after looking at the preview, I may have to fit in this limited series. It has the kind of writing I've come to expect from Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, and that's a very good thing.

Status: In Consideration.

Batgirl #22

  • Written by Bryan Q. Miller
  • Art by Pere Perez
  • Cover by Dustin Nguyen

When Stephanie Brown arrives in London for a top-secret Batman Incorporated assignment, jet lag, lost luggage and those terribly difficult accents are the least of Batgirl's problems – the actual Greenwich Mean has been stolen, and as all of London literally grinds to a halt, it's up to Batgirl and Squire to save the United Kingdom! Tally-ho!

I can't get every issue of this book. I just don't have the funds for all the ongoings I'd like to read. So, I pick up an issue here and there that looks interesting and is stand-alone enough to read on its own. With the Batman Incorporated mission and the inclusion of Squire, this one fits the bill.

Status: (Almost Certainly) Buying It.

Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #1

  • Written by J.T. Krul
  • Art by Mikel Janin
  • Cover by Cliff Chiang

FLASH FACT! For their last performance – an escape act!

I'm still on the fence about all the Flashpoint books. This one looks a little interesting, but I don't know about J.T. Krul's writing. It has a wonderful cover, though.

Status: Of Interest.

X-Factor #221

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino
  • Cover by David Yardin

“Forgive Me, Father, For I Have KILLED!”

Hoping to be absolved of recently committed sins before she gives birth, Wolfsbane goes to confess…but it isn’t forgiveness that awaits her. In fact, she’s going to have to face her demons head on. Literally! (Oh, and that baby she’s carrying? Turns out that it’s not quite what she expected either.) The next X-citing chapter of X-FACTOR begins here!

I just really like this comic. It's a really solid book. Peter David's writing is always good, and even when it seems like he's done something poorly, if you wait you find that he ends up making it awesome. And Emannuela Lupacchino has been pretty good with the art lately.

Status: Buying It.
