Weekly Previews for May 4, 2011

Previews are late this week. Lots going on here, but never mind that. Even though these books came out yesterday, there's some good ones here, and I'm not getting to the shop until Saturday, anyway. (And you'd better go then, too. It's Free Comic Book Day, after all.)

Oddly enough, if it weren't for the final issue of Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth, everything here would be from Marvel. There are a bunch of $1 books out this week (probably for FCBD), mostly from Boom and Image, and they're probably all worth picking up if you've got the extra cash. If you have or know some kids who'd like a comic, the Boom Blast $1 edition of The Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck #1 is definitely worth your while. In fact, you'd be making a good choice shelling out the extra cash for the whole collection.

Okay, on to the comics!

Avengers Academy Giant-Size #1

  • Written by Paul Tobin
  • Pencils by David Baldeon
  • Cover by Ed McGuinness
  • Variant Cover by Chris Samnee

HUMONGOUS-Sized Issue…Guest-starring The Young Allies!

The traps are set and the dice are rolled as the vibrantly villainous Arcade decides to rebuild his tarnished reputation…by setting his sights on the “easy pickin’s” of the Avengers Academy and the Young Allies! But when one of his teenage victims escapes, is it a setback for Arcade, or all part of a master plan to turn the entirety of New York into... Murderworld?

I actually like Arcade stories, and I've heard good things about at least one of these books (Young Allies and Avengers Academy), so this might be worth a look. It's expensive — though at a reasonable page-count for the cost. Still, there's a good amount already on tap for this month, so I'm not sure if a “may be decent” book will fit in.

Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth #3

  • Written by Malachai Nicolle
  • Art & Cover by Ethan Nicolle

Just when you thought the ground-breaking hit comic Axe Cop couldn’t get more awesome, it gets MORE AWESOME!

Axe Cop is in big trouble! The authorities are on his case, he’s on a crazy time-travel mission to try to save the dinosaurs from a horrible war with aliens, and while he’s been away, a team of evil brothers has been assembling a massive team of bad guys bent on taking over the earth! But with the help of his awesome crime-fighting team, including Dinosaur Soldier, Sockarang, and the mighty doggie hero Ralph Wrinkles, Axe Cop might still be able to save the planet. But there’s one more battle for our brave axe man in blue, and he must time-travel to the age of swords to make it all happen!

I'm just sad that this is the final issue of this mini. I hope they can do more of this in the future.

Fear Itself: Spider-Man #1

  • Written by Christopher Yost
  • Pencils by Mike McKone
  • Cover by Marko Djurdjevic

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN

SPIDER-MAN IS ROCKED BY THE EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Manhattan is gripped in violent panic. Peter Parker has not slept in days. Abandoning his friends and family, Spider-Man cannot…WILL not… stop if there are people to be saved. But as the opening salvos of Fear Itself take their violent toll, will Spidey have what it takes to fight his own doubts? Find out here!

I really don't care that this is a Fear Itself tie-in. I just like Spider-Man, and if I can get a good, mostly self-contained story, I'm happy. I've enjoyed what I've read by Chis Yost before, so I'll check this one out in the shop.

Herc #2

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Neil Edwards
  • Cover by Carlo Pagulayan

This explosive new ongoing series sets Marvel's baddest bone-breaker loose on a raging one-man beat down of the Marvel Universe's vicious criminal underground. And he won't be relying on his fists alone! Armed with the keys to Ares' abandoned armory, Hercules is ready to unleash three thousand years worth of brawling experience upon his foes while preparing to confront the perils of FEAR ITSELF!

It's Hercules like you've never seen him before as he sets out on an action-packed epic of monumental proportions that will keep fans on the edge of their seats and demanding more!

Discover what happens when the Earth's most formidable warrior is forced to cut a swath of destruction through the very core of the Marvel Universe in the all-new, all ruthless Herc #1 & 2 double-shipping this April!

I'm not sure why this was delayed two weeks, but I'm glad it's here now. The first issue had promise: good art, fed my mythology pangs, Hercules being a hero while still being himself. In short, basically what I was looking for. Hopefully it doesn't get dragged too much into Fear Itself, and can focus on Herc. They can do it well (Herc's got enough fears of his own to overcome, so it's not a stretch) and I trust Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente to do so.

A MARVELOUS reinterpretation of one of the most enigmatic characters in Marvel history starts right here!

I keep wanting to get into Moon Knight. Is this the right book for that? Maybe, maybe not.

Taskmaster: Unthinkable (TPB)

  • Written by Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Jefte Palo
  • Cover by Alex Garner

Taskmaster has trained henchmen for every terrorist organization and criminal cartel in the Marvel Universe. So when the rumor starts that he’s turned traitor and now works for Steve Rogers, a billion-dollar bounty is put on his head. Now, every cadre of costumed fanatics — A.I.M., Hydra, Ultimatum, the Sons of the Serpent and more — is looking to collect. Taskmaster must fight hordes upon hordes of his psychopathic students while at the same time uncovering who framed him — which requires him figuring out who he really is! That’s right, the man with the photographic reflexes has no memory of his true identity — and you’ll learn the unexpected truth along with him! The action-packed secret origin comes courtesy of New York Times bestselling writer Fred Van Lente (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and acclaimed artist Jefte Paolo (DOCTOR VOODOO)! Collecting TASKMASTER #1-4 and material from AGE OF HEROES #3.

I thought about getting this when it came out in single issues but didn't. Still not sure if I'd buy this over some other trade (recent or not), but if I found it for cheap, I'd pick it up for sure.

Status: Of Interest.

That's it for this week. I'll be getting more than these, of course, as I'll be heading into the shop on Free Comic Book Day this month.
