Weekly Previews for February 16, 2011

Previews are coming a little late this week, but they have arrived! This week we've got a new issue of S.H.I.E.L.D. (always worth celebration), the start of a new Silver Surfer mini, and more. Read on to see 'em all.

Amazing Spider-Man #654.1

  • Written by Dan Slott
  • Pencils & Cover by Paulo Siqueira

START READING with this Point One issue to learn the new meaning for great power and great responsibility! Witness the birth of a new Spider-Man in the start of a brand-new story arc! Bonded to the dangerous and powerful Venom symbiote, this new webslinger is showing Peter Parker up in the hero department! Plus, who will Spider-Man turn to in his darkest hour? Believe us, it’s not who you think!

I know I said last week that I need to stop listing Amazing Spider-Man here (I'd like to get it, but I'll have to get it in trades as I don't want to kick out two books to get this), and I have no intention of listing every Point One issue, but the interesting thing to note here is that each of the first three Point One issues released seems unnecessary. Iron Man #500.1 came out on the heels of an anniversary issue, which is traditionally a good jumping-on point; Wolverine #5.1 came out after the fifth issue of a renumbering — it would've been more useful to put out a cheap compilation of those five issues (like they recently did with their Must Haves); and this also is only a few issues into a new start for the book: Big Time. So why bother making these Point One issues for books that just recently got a kick-start anyway? Uniformity of a marketing plan, I guess. Kind of a poor reason to do anything, I think.

Angel #42

  • Written by David Tischman & Mariah Huehner
  • Art by Elena Casagrande
  • Cover by Jenny Frison

Illyria finds Angel in deep trouble, and Angel finds Illyria... altered. The two of them must confront Wolfram & Hart, and the Big Bad, if they have any hope of rescuing L.A. Of course, it's not nearly that simple, and Illyria must make a sacrifice so Angel can do what he does best: be a hero.

Once again, I'm an issue behind on my Angel reading. Don't think I haven't been enjoying it — the story has been very interesting and the art has been pretty decent (except for that fill-in art two issues ago — damn that was bad) — I just rarely seem to have time to read these with my wife, which we do for this and Buffy. Anyway, I have been enjoying this, and I'm kind of wishing I could've fit the Illyria mini into my budget now that she's coming back into this book (and that mini looked interesting, too), but hopefully it's not required to enjoy this.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #6

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Dustin Weaver
  • Cover by Gerald Parel

This chapter comes to a close in a fashion that will have your jaw on the floor. It is Da Vinci vs. Newton with the fate of the world in the balance. Who is the Night Machine on the side of? What role will the Celestial Child play? The most talked about book of 2010 closes its first volume with a bang. But don’t worry, the same team will be back soon with volume 2!

So … the close of the first volume of S.H.I.E.L.D. — can we expect a gorgeous, over-sized hardcover of these first six issues, then? Even though I don't normally get stories twice just for the different format, that would be one I'd consider. The art has been marvelous here, well worth the extra-month wait between issues. The only downside is that the story has been marvelous also, and it's hard to wait that long to read more of it. Luckily, it's so good (and coupled with that art) that I don't mind rereading these to refresh my memory.

Silver Surfer #1

  • Written by Greg Pak
  • Pencils by Stephen Segovia
  • Cover by Carlo Pagulayan

The sentinel of the spaceways walks the Earth once more, a stranger feared by many. Only the HIGH EVOLUTIONARY understands his true potential, but the Evolutionary’s mysterious grand design may cost the Surfer everything and change the cosmic balance forever! He’s traded blows with Thor and matched wits with Mephisto, but can the herald of Galactus survive the judgment of NORRIN RAND, the man within the Silver Surfer? It’s a character-defining epic showing the Silver Surfer as you’ve never seen him before, brought to you by “Planet Hulk” writer Greg Pak and “Dark Wolverine” artist Stephen Segovia.

I love the Silver Surfer and have since reading his first appearance in Fantastic Four. I also loved Greg Pak's Hercules work (with Fred Van Lente), though I haven't been reading his Hulk books. All that adds up to a high interest in this for me. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Young Justice #1

  • Written by Art Baltazar & Franco
  • Art & Cover by Mike Norton

It's moving-in day for Superboy and Miss Martian as they choose their rooms at their new headquarters! But the Boy of Steel is haunted by the Cave's memories and strange visions of his past…

I flipped through the #0 issue of this last month and it looked good (none of the kids wanted it and I wasn't going to buy it for me, so it stayed in the shop). Looks like it'll be good on its own even though it's a tie-in to a cartoon.

That's all I saw of interest this week. What else should I be looking at?
