Another Tuesday, another set of Previews! This is one of the weeks that make me wish I could make it to the shop more often, as three of my favorite comics (all DC) come out this week. What are they? What else looks good this week? Read on to find out.
This is probably my first week of having no Marvel books to look at … almost. Marvel is releasing five “Must Have” books this week, each collecting the first three issues of their respective series for $3.99 to $4.99! This is a major deal, and if any are left when I get to the shop in a few weeks, I may have to check out some of them. Some of these series looked really good, but weren't of enough interest to fit into my budget, but three issues (72 pages) for about the price of one is a great deal (even if they're probably all be half an arc). The issues are:
- Avengers Academy: Meet the New Class ($3.99)
- Avengers: The Children's Crusade: Search for the Scarlet Witch ($4.99)
- Daken: Dark Wolverine: Empire ($3.99)
- Wolverine: Wolverine Goes to Hell ($4.99) (88 pages)
- X-23: Killing Dream ($3.99)
Also out this week from Marvel are the newest Chaos War tie-in, Dead Avengers #3, and the very quick return of Daredevil to the stands (it seems like there should've been more down time to give this shift more weight): Daredevil: Reborn #1.
Okay, from here on out it's DC's show (with one side-step along the way).
Batgirl #17
- Written by Bryan Q. Miller
- Art by Pere Perez
- Cover by Dustin Nguyen
Batgirl has been given her first sanctioned Batman Incorporated assignment solving a series of high-profile kidnappings, and she's thrilled! Well, she was – until Damian Wayne decided to ride shotgun. Can the Dysfunctional Duo stop fighting long enough to save the children of Gotham City's elite?
This is one of those books that I'd be picking up if I had more room in my comics budget. As it is, I pick up the odd issue here and there if it looks interesting enough and stands up well enough on its own. This looks to fit the bill. Any team-up with Damian is bound to be good, so I'll take a long hard look at this one in the shop.

Booster Gold #40
- Written by Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis
- Art & Cover by Chris Batista & Rich Perrotta
Coming to grips with reality at last, Booster Gold steps up his game and finally accepts the fact that his best friend, Blue Beetle Ted Kord, is dead. This is bad news for the villain who shows up this month because they're about to face an angry Booster Gold…
It's issues like last month's Booster Gold that make me wish I was following this comic. I fell in love with Booster reading 52 and have loved seeing him in everything I've read since. One of those things was the Countdown to Infinite Crisis one-shot where Ted Kord is murdered by Maxwell Lord. Coming full circle now, this is why I wish I was following this title: last month's emotional scenes with Booster venting about Max Lord and then coming to terms with Ted's death. Unfortunately, I'm really out of the loop with his character, and I don't quite have the room for another ongoing right now. Darn.
Status: Of Interest.
Infinite Vacation #1
- Written by Nick Spencer
- Art & Cover by Christian Ward
Welcome to the Infinite Vacation, where changing your life is always just a click away!
Mark lives in a world where alternate realities are up for sale, and buying and trading your way through unlimited variations of yourself is as commonplace as checking your email or updating your status. But when other "hims" start dying suddenly and he meets a mysterious girl who wants nothing to do with "life-changing," he'll learn the truth about the universe he stumbles through, and what happens when your vacation turns on you.
This is the second straight week that a new Image comic looks really interesting. We all have to deal with the limited paths we can take in this finite life, and a world where that's no longer an issue is both intriguing and frightening. The preview looks good enough to check out more extensively in the shop.

Knight & Squire #4
- Written by Paul Cornell
- Art by Jimmy Broxton
- Cover by Yanick Paquette & Michael Lacombe
The Knight battles against his own armor – in his own castle! Elsewhere, Squire struggles with romance and the possibility that she's being set up for betrayal! And meet Hank, the Knight's very American butler…
This miniseries has just been a fun ride for me. Very British, very “out-there” — I'm just sad that it's half over now.

Red Robin #19
- Written by Fabian Nicieza
- Art and cover by Marcus To & Ray McCarthy
When Red Robin and his friends are trapped in the unknown world of the Unternet by the Calculator's fail-safe program, it's Batman and Robin to the rescue – but which Batman and Robin is it? If the Unternet is a telepathic communications gestalt where the villains' dreams come true, can Red Robin become its waking nightmare?
The last issue ended with Red Robin's entire team incapacitated by the Calculator through their comm links. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Unwritten #21
- Written by Mike Carey
- Art by Peter Gross & Vince Locke
- Cover by Yuko Shimizu
Cut off from his friends and trapped in a novel with a tragic ending, Tom confronts Captain Ahab, tries his hand at grand theft narrative, and meets a monster. But this isn't any kind of monster he was expecting!
Still catching up on my reading (I'm a couple of issues behind at this point), but it's another issue of The Unwritten. What more could you ask for?
Status: Buying It.
That's it for this week. What are you looking at on the stands this week?
