Weekly Previews for December 29, 2010

December has been a crazy month for me, but things should be getting back on track now. That means I'll actually be posting some reviews and maybe some features, too. And most importantly (at least right now): this should be the last Previews to come after-the-fact (unless you're in a country where comic book day is not Wednesday).

With that out of the way, let's see what's up for this week! We've got a couple of great books by Jonathan Hickman, the last of the new Bat-books, another Chaos War tie-in, and a few others that've piqued my interest. Read on to see 'em all.

The Weekly Previews are my chance to showcase the newly released books (single issues and collections) that catch my eye each week. Some are from my pull-list, some look interesting enough to check out, and some are just notable from one reason or another. Enjoy.

Batman: The Dark Knight #1

  • Written by David Finch
  • Art by David Finch & Scott Williams
  • Cover by David Finch

Comics superstar David Finch takes full creative control (both writing and illustrating!) on this brand-new Batman monthly series! Joined by the best of the best – Scott Williams – on inks, this new series is sure to be on everyone's must-read pile! Delving into the more supernatural and esoteric areas of Gotham City, the 6-part storyline explores the horrific murder of one of Bruce Wayne's childhood friends…and the terrible ramifications the brutal crime has on Batman's life!

This is the last of the Bat-book debuts following Bruce Wayne's return. I'm not sure how interested I am in this one (I think I like my Batman more grounded and less supernatural), and I'm even less sure that I can even fit it into my budget, but it's at least worth checking out.

Status: Of Interest.

Chaos War: X-Men #1

  • Written by Chris Claremont & Louise Simonson
  • Pencils by Doug Braithwaite
  • Cover by Carlo Pagalayan

X-Men greats Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson join artist extraordinaire Doug Braithwaite in a special 2-issue CHAOS WAR tie-in. As the Marvel Universe is destroyed pantheon by pantheon by the dark god, Chaos King, the rift between the underworld and Earth is violently ripped apart. How can a handful of deceased X-Men make a difference in Chaos King's war against life? Get ready for the startling answer when the most unique team of mutants ever bands together to save the Earth from eternal darkness.

The tie-ins for Chaos War haven't looked good enough to pick up, and I barely mentioned the ones from last week in Previews, so why mention this one? Chris Claremont + X-Men = love. I still doubt this will matter at all in the event, and I'm not impressed with the event itself enough to have to buy the tie-ins, but I'll have to take a look at this one, anyway.

Status: In Consideration.

Detective Comics #872

  • Written by Scott Snyder
  • Art & Cover by Jock
  • Co-feature Art by Francesco Francavilla

Continuing the new series direction from the writer Scott Snyder (AMERICAN VAMPIRE) and artist Jock (THE LOSERS)! A series of disturbing clues brings Batman face-to-face with Gotham City's dark past and deadly present. Plus, Jim Gordon continues a harrowing search to uncover the truth about a frightening figure from his own past. . . Be here for part 2 of "The Black Mirror."

My shop was out of Scott Snyder's first issue of Detective Comics, and I somehow didn't have it on my pull-list, so I haven't seen it yet. I'm still really excited about this run, though, and I can't wait to get both issues.

Status: Buying It.

Hellboy: The Sleeping & the Dead #1

  • Written by Mike Mignola
  • Art by Scott Hampton
  • Colors by Dave Stewart
  • Cover by Mike Mignola

While chasing a giant bat through the forest, Hellboy meets an old man with insider knowledge of the coming vampire apocalypse.

For the first time, Mike Mignola teams up with artist Scott Hampton (Batman, The Books of Magic) for this gothic tale.

I love me some Hellboy, but I'm way behind. I don't actually own any of the books; my library has a bunch of the trades, and I've read them. I'll get them all eventually, but other things have taken priority so far. So, I won't actually buy this, but a Hellboy book is always worth a mention, and this is a book with vampires that doesn't exist to just capitalize on a fad — and ought to be really good, to boot.

Status: Trade Waiting.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #5

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Dustin Weaver
  • Cover by Gerald Parel
“The Forgotten Machines of XXXXXX XXXXX”

The story that has taken the comic book world by storm marches on with an issue so secretive that we can’t even reveal the full title! WHO IS THE NIGHT MACHINE?! Find your answer here from Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR) and Dustin Weaver (X-MEN). Every issue has sold out and gone into multiple printings. IT’S GOOD! WE PROMISE! Don’t miss the sleeper hit of 2010!

This has been one of the best books this year. Every issue surprises me with the ideas presented, and the art is amazing (and the colors, don't forget the colors — even though Marvel did in the solicit). One of the last major players so far gets showcased here — The Night Machine — and I know I'll be surprised with whatever we find out about him.

Status: Buying It.

Spider-Girl #2

  • Written by Paul Tobin
  • Pencils by Clayton Henry
  • Cover by Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic

Still reeling from the shattering events in the first issue, Spider-Girl faces one of the strongest threats in the Marvel Universe, the RED HULK. But how can one teenage girl stop a menace that has the FANTASTIC FOUR on their heels, and what’s the cost of the battle for New York City... and the life of Anya Corazon?

I flipped through the first issue, and it looked really good. Couldn't fit it into my budget, and I don't know if I can fit it now either, but I'd really like to.

Status: In Consideration.

Ultimate Comics Thor #3

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils & Cover by Carlos Pacheco

Thor’s thrilling origin continues! Betrayal rocks Asgard as predators breach its walls! Will Thor be able to protect his home and prevent Ragnorak? Or are some things just inevitable? Rockstars Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco take you on an epic tale of duty and destiny that spans decades and worlds. Don’t miss the adventure that started it all!

This has been a really fun book with lots going on and really nice art. I don't know anything about the Ultimate Universe, but I don't need to. I was really surprised at the reveal at the end of the last issue, and I can't wait to see where Hickman goes from here.

Status: Buying It.
