Weekly Previews for November 17, 2010

Previews time! Highlights for this week include the start of Batman Incorporated, Bruce Wayne's nth return in Batman: The Return, and X-Factor v. undead Norsemen. Read on to find out about those and more.

Angel #39

  • Written by David Tischman & Mariah Huehner
  • Art by Elena Casagrande
  • Cover by Jenny Frison
  • “The Wolf, the Ram, and the Heart, part 1!” Now that all the weirdness has been explained, Angel and company are looking to get back to what they do best. Except an old enemy with the letters W and H comes back, Angel gets transported, and a whole new can of demony worms is opened. Literally.

Okay, I'm getting tired of writing this, but I'm behind on my Angel reading. So behind that now we're out of Bill Willingham's tenure on the book and into the final push from IDW before it gets handed over to Dark Horse next year. Starting here, we'll see how this series aligns itself with what's been going on in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Should be interesting.

    Batman Incorporated #1

  • Written by Grant Morrison
  • Art & Cover by Yanick Paquette
  • Grant Morrison continues his earth-shattering run on the Batman titles with this exciting, new ongoing series! Featuring; Art by the remarkable Yanick Paquette (SEVEN SOLDIERS: BULLETEER), BATMAN, INC. marks the next stage of evolution for The Dark Knight. This can't-miss series will star not just Bruce Wayne as Batman, but also a huge number of guest-stars! Don't miss out on this all-new start to a stunning direction for Batman!

So, the question now is: with Bruce Wayne back, which Batman series do you get? I, for one, think this is the most intriguing of the offerings (though I'm still on for Detective Comics, but that's focused on Dick Grayson). Batman going global and actually seeking out help? That's an interesting direction for a character that's been so intent on doing things himself and not trusting anyone. And, if Yanick Paquette's artwork is anywhere near his amazing covers for Knight and Squire — or even his work on the third issue of Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne — it'll be hard to turn this one down.

    Batman: The Return

  • Written by Grant Morrison
  • Art by David Finch & Scott Williams
  • Cover by David Finch
  • The event of the year is here! Bruce Wayne made his long journey back through the timestream in RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, Dick Grayson and Damian uncovered important secrets in BATMAN and ROBIN, Gotham City's bravest heroes made their mark in BRUCE WAYNE – THE ROAD HOME…and now it's time for BATMAN to return! What happens to Dick Grayson now that the "real" Batman is back? How will Bruce Wayne handle a reunion with his son, Damian? This special one-shot bridges two exciting eras of The Dark Knight and sets up a surprising new status quo that's just on the horizon.

Featuring the talents of Batman mastermind Grant Morrison and superstar artist David Finch providing interior art, this issue is a can't-miss for comics fans!

I suppose I should get this — and I was excited for it when it was first solicited — but with the last few lackluster issues of Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne, I'm not as excited as I was.

    Batman: Streets of Gotham #17

  • Written by Paul Dini
  • Co-feature Written by Fabian Nicieza
  • Art by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs
  • Cover by Dustin Nguyen
  • With Bruce Wayne soon to return to Gotham City, the secret past lives of his parents Thomas and Martha have come back to haunt the family legacy! What bizarre experience in their past is connected to the horrible plan that Tommy Elliot has set in motion? Find out here in part 2 of the 5-part sequel to the best-selling "Heart of Hush"!

Plus, don't miss the start of a new Ragman co- feature, written by Fabian Nicieza (RED ROBIN)! This 5-part story finds Rory Regan starting a new job at the city morgue as his tenement neighborhood is threatened by the Mayor's "renewal plan" and Firefly, an arsonist who might be on the city payroll!

While I have no interest in the main feature (especially in picking it up partway through), I do have an interest in Ragman as a character and Fabian Nicieza as a writer. Whether that's enough to pick up a book for, at best, half the pages, remains to be seen.

    Chaos War: Chaos King #1

  • Written by Brandon Montclare
  • Pencils & Cover by Michael Kaluta
  • CHAOS WAR tie-in! What method or madness lies within the mind of the CHAOS KING? Witness the first strikes of CHAOS WAR here! As darkness blankets the stars, only the gods of Zenn-La, homeworld of the SILVER SURFER, remain to oppose the Chaos King before he begins his march on the final battleground: Earth! And Earth's first line of defense against this unstoppable evil? IMPOSSIBLE MAN!? All this, and the destruction of Hell itself, written by BRANDON MONTCLARE, and brought to life by living legend M. W. KALUTA!

I'm interested in the character of Chaos King — and I like reading haiku — but is that enough to pick this up? It'll be one to flip through, at least.

    Chaos War: Dead Avengers #1

  • Written by Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils & Cover by Tom Grummett
  • CHAOS WAR tie-in! The Vision. Captain Mar-Vell. Yellowjacket. Deathcry. Swordsman. Dr. Druid. All lost their lives in the line of duty...or in disgrace. When Earth's Mightiest Heroes are themselves laid low in the carnage of the CHAOS WAR and the graves give up their dead, these six find themselves mysteriously returned, to RE-ASSEMBLE against the CHAOS KING's most fearsome ally -- one of the Avengers' greatest foes! It’s a final chance at redemption, a second life, and most importantly, to prove -- once and for all -- that they are worthy of the name... AVENGERS.

I'm really tempted with this one. It's written by Fred Van Lente whose work I enjoy, and who co-writes the main title in this event. But, this is a three-issue tie-in, so I'll have to take a look in the shop to see if it'll be worth the commitment, as I have little investment in the characters.

    Spider-Girl #1

  • Written by Paul Tobin
  • Pencils & Inks by Clayton A. Henry
  • Colors by Brad Anderson
  • Cover by Barry Kitson
  • Spinning from the GRIM HUNT in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! Not every fight can get resolved by punching someone in the face…but Spider-Girl's gonna punch somebody anyway, just to make sure. Follow the swinging adventures of Anya Corazon, the Splendiferous Spider-Girl, as she balances the daily grind of teenage life with the bumps and bruises brought by banging 'bows with bad guys! Guest-starring the FANTASTIC FOUR and a villain that our hero could NEVER, EVER, EVER defeat. Paul Tobin (SPIDER-MAN, SUPER HEROES) and Clayton Henry (UNCANNY X-MEN) present an all-new hero for an all-new era!

From what I've seen, this looks to be a good series. I'm not sure if I can fit it into my budget, but it's worth trying.

    X-Factor #211

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino
  • Colors by Chris Chuckry
  • Cover by David Yardin
  • It's a battle royale in the streets of Vegas, as Madrox and Longshot discover that sometimes the only thing worse than a plan that doesn't work…is a plan that works all too well. And when that plan is to try and get the attention of a death goddess, and that attention consists of her sending her undead warrior hordes against you, well…what's happening in Vegas may well extend to staying there for eternity…

After last month's aside with the members of X-Factor not in Vegas, we get back to the majority of the team — and the latest case — here. I'm expecting what I expect every month from X-Factor: strong writing and weak-to-average art. (It's worth it for the writing, though.)
