Weekly Previews for October 20, 2010

A quieter week for me in this Bruce Wayne homecoming month: only two books that I may or may not pick up. But, that leaves plenty of potential room for some one-shots and some ongoings. Keep reading to see which ones.

Bruce Wayne — The Road Home: Catwoman

  • Written by Derek Fridolfs
  • Art by Peter Nguyen
  • Cover by Shane Davis

The last time Selina Kyle saw Bruce Wayne, she was lying in a hospital bed, her life having just been saved by the man she loved. Can Catwoman handle Bruce's return after having mourned his death?

I don't quite have the interest in this one-shot that I do for some of the other “Road Home” issues. I love the dynamic between Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne, but I don't have current knowledge of that relationship, so I'm not sure this would be worth it for me. Also, I've never heard of Derek Fridolfs before. Still, if I hear good things about it and it looks good in-store, I may pick it up.

Bruce Wayne — The Road Home: Commissioner Gordon

  • Written by Adam Beechen
  • Art by Szymon Kudranski
  • Cover by Shane Davis

For several months now, Commissioner Jim Gordon has known he's been working alongside a "different" Batman. But with Bruce Wayne now returned, what will that mean for the future of Gotham City and their own crime fighting chemistry?

Again, I'm not up-to-date with the relationship here, and I don't know the writer, but I do like Jim Gordon, so I'll still take a look in the store.

Chaos War #2

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Khoi Pham
  • Inks by Thomas Palmer
  • Colors by Sunny Gho
  • Lettering by Simon Bowland
  • Cover by Brandon Peterson

The premiere event of the fall continues! When the greatest threat the Marvel Universe has ever seen lays waste to reality and brings Earth's mightiest heroes to their knees, who you gonna call? That's right: the all-new, all-different, all-divine GOD SQUAD! The fan-favorite team from SECRET INVASION returns, led by Thor and Hercules. And check out the cosmic heavy-hitters they choose to round out their sacred strikeforce: Galactus, Silver Surfer, Venus, Sersi and Hellstorm! Plus: After the shocking death of a major Marvel character last issue, you'll never believe who the Chaos King has next on his hit list!

Man, I'm behind on my reading! In my defense, the first issue only came out two weeks ago, and I've been waiting to have a decent amount of quiet-time to read this one. Still, I'm already committed to this title, as I've really been enjoying what Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente have been doing with their Hercules and Amadeus Cho mega-story.

Ragman: Suit of Souls

  • Written by Christos N. Gage
  • Art by Stephen Segovia
  • Cover by Jesus Saiz

Rory Regan has long struggled to reconcile the burden he carries as the Ragman, protector of society's forgotten, with his own strained faith.

Could the souls he has consigned to redeem themselves within his mystic suit have the answers he needs about what lies beyond — and about the mysteries kept from him by his own father? Christos Gage (STORMWATCH: PHD, Avengers: The Initiative) and Stephen Segovia (Wolverine) provide a look inside one of the DCU's most peculiar Super Heroes in this standalone one-shot!

I first found out about Ragman finding Batman-related characters for my 5-year-old son — he can't get enough of them. So, I found him, my son fell in love with him (his look, really — it's usually about the look at that age), and I found myself intrigued. Which brings us here, with a one-shot all about Ragman. If it looks good, and I can fit it into a month filled with Batman one-shots, I'll be picking it up.

Vertigo Resurrected

  • Written by Warren Ellis, Brian Azzarello, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis & others
  • Art by Jim Lee, Phil Jimenez, Bernie Wrightson & others
  • Cover by Tim Bradstreet

"Shoot," Warren Ellis's much-talked about, but never published story, involving schoolyard killings leads this mega-sized VERTIGO RESURRECTION Special. Also included are rarely seen tales exploring the disturbing depths of horror, war, romance and science fiction by Brian Azzarello, Brian Bolland, Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison, Jim Lee, Peter Milligan, Bill Willingham, Bernie Wrighston and more!

Like all anthologies, this could be anywhere from awesome to crappy. With the names associated with it (and the Vertigo imprint), it should lean much closer to the awesome side, but you never know. Even still, it'll be hard to fit this in this month with all the “Return of Bruce Wayne” titles and the $7.99 price tag (worth it for the size, I'd say, but that's at least two other books I wouldn't be able to get).

X-Factor #210

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Valentine de Landro
  • Inks by Pat Davidson
  • Colors by Jeromy Cox
  • Cover by David Yardin

Wolfsbane returns to the team traumatized by her time with X-Force only to be slapped in the face by ex-boyfriend Rictor's new relationship with Shatterstar. Can Rictor repair the damage and ease her mind? And what exactly is the nature of the child growing inside her? Meanwhile, with the rest of the team in Las Vegas, Monet is visited by a war veteran with a terrifying secret.

I really think Peter David has done a great job of balancing all the members of the team and their stories. He allows for issues like this that step away from the main action, for a bit, to keep up with the other characters. It's a real team book — and you don't always get that with books supposedly about teams.
