Weekly Previews for August 11, 2010

This is not a big week for me. Only one book from my pull list, and only a couple others of interest to me. Read on to see what new releases caught my eye this week.

Bone: Tall Tales (HC & TPB)

  • Written by Tom Sniegoski & Jeff Smith
  • Art and Cover by Jeff Smith

Says Jeff Smith:

Tall Tales is a major repackaging of a book I did with Tom Sniegoski a few years ago called Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. This new book, which takes place after the Bones have returned to Boneville, revolves around Smiley and Bartleby telling tales around a campfire to a group of young Bone Scouts (their names are Ringo, Bingo, & Todd!).

One of the tales will be the long out of print story I did for Disney Adventures that was not in the BONE books, and will now be returned to the BONE cannon with a beautiful coloring job by Steve Hamaker. Another will be the The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero, which appeared in black & white as Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. Tom Sniegoski, who wrote SSRT, has written two new Johnson Bone stories, both of which are pretty incredible. All now in glorious Hamaker colors! I will be writing all the new Smiley and Bartleby stuff.

I think this may have been available on Amazon or elsewhere before this Wednesday, but it's listed as a new release by my LCS, so here it is. I love Bone, but don't actually own any of it. My whole family (the reading population, anyway) have read it all from the library, including the Rose prequel, but not Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails, so this may be worth checking out even though there's another author attached to it. But I'm pretty sure I won't be buying this until I buy the original stories, and that'll be a hefty chunk of change, so … it'll be a while.

Dungeons & Dragons #0

Dungeons & Dragons #0 cover
  • Written by John Rogers & Alex Irvine
  • Art by Andrea DiVito & Peter Bergting
  • Covers by Paul Renaud & Wayne Reynolds

Step into the world of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS! Take your first strides on a long and majestic adventure—fight to stay alive—fight for honor—fight for glory!

In this special issue you'll get two stories introducing you to the upcoming D&D worlds, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content, too. All this leads up to the thrilling release of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS #1 in November and a DARK SUN limited series in January. Don't miss this value-priced jumping-on point for the all-new wave of D&D comics!

I read the preview of this and it seems like your standard fantasy story. You've got your warrior leader, the movie versions of Legolas and Gimli, your “doin’ things my own way” chick (she's apparantly also filling the role of klepto-thief) and your exotic “outsider” magic-using chick of some undetermined species (who also seems to be the “Rescue her! Oh snap, she was really in control of the situation and she's gonna be bitchy about it now!” role). Of course, I'm also a sucker for fantasy, so it might be worth another look at the store, especially at $1.

The Unwritten #16

The Unwritten #16 cover
  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Art by Peter Gross
  • Cover by Yuko Shimizu

When Tom and Wilson Taylor come face-to-face, secrets are revealed, friends and enemies unmask, and chickens come home to roost. All this plus exclusive coverage of the launch party for the 14th Tommy Taylor novel – an unexploded bomb and a perfect gift for loved ones.

This is the only book on my pull list this week, but I could (almost) handle it if it were the only book I got each month. Every issue of this series has been awesome. With Wilson Taylor coming out in the open last issue, it looks like a lot of things are coming to a head this issue. But, I'm always surprised at something that happens each issue, so I don't dare predict anything. Also, look at the excellent cover work (again) by Yuko Shimizu. I like how Wilson's “God strings” have phrases in them: a trap set for both father andnothing so mundane as revengea succession of masks without anyterrified to face the possibilityfinal showdown with hisdetermined to uncover the truth …. This whole series has been built like that: so much under the surface to discover.
