Weekly Previews for January 11, 2012

This is my huge week (in number of comics), and one day (probably just before it's not my huge week anymore, as these things go) I'll switch to getting my comics on the second week of the month instead of the first. Then maybe I'll be up-to-date with all of the books coming out. But, for now, I'll just mention the slew of regulars that're released this week and comment only on the ones about which I have something to say.

(Also, I missed last week's Previews, but there was really very little to speak of. Only three books I was looking at, only one was iffy, and I was very tired. So, no Previews. Last week, that is. This week, plenty.)

Intrepids, Vol. 1 (TPB)

  • Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe
  • Art & Cover by Scott Kowalchuk

The Intrepids are a collection of runaway and homeless teenagers that have been taken in and cared for by an aging inventor, Dante. Applying his brilliance, he crafts marvelous technological contraptions. With his vision and help, the teenagers agree to don his technology for the betterment of mankind. Together, they combat tyranny and stop madmen from bringing harm to the world. Included in the collection are Intrepids Public Service Announcements from your favourite comic artists.

Collects INTREPIDS #1-6

This looked like a bunch of fun. Plus, I've heard good things about it. I'll see when I have the free cash to pick up this trade. (Also, I'll have to see where it fits in my looooooong list of trades to check out.)

Scarlet Spider #1

  • Written by Christopher Yost
  • Art & Cover by Ryan Stegman
  • Variant Covers by Ryan Stegman & Mark Bagley

Spinning out of Spider-Island, The Secrets of the Brand New Scarlet Spider stand revealed in 40 Pages!!

Who is the new webbed wonder – and why has he come to face corruption in Houston, Texas?

This also looks like it could be fun. It's nice to see a change of scenery in the mostly NYC (with a sprinkling of the west coast) Marvel U. I usually enjoy Chris Yost's writing (he killed on the first year of Red Robin, for one), so maybe it's worth a shot. Then again, I'm pretty overloaded with books, budget-wise, so it's not certain I'll even be able to give it a shot.

Secret Avengers #21

  • Written by Warren Ellis
  • Art by Stuart Immonen
  • Cover by John Cassaday

SAVE THE WORLD.

SOMETHING IS DANGEROUSLY AWRY IN THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL EMERGENCY (O*N*E)…

This may be the last issue of Secret Avengers I pick up. Not because it's not good. It's been supremely awesome under Warren Ellis. I can't recall anything I've read of Rick Remender's, but others who have are quite excited about his upcoming (after this issue) run. And the new team has Johnny Storm on it, and I love the Fantastic Four, and I'd like to see how his death maybe leads him to do more, not quite shifty, but darker, maybe, work. So why might this be my last issue? Well, as I mentioned above, I've pretty loaded with books right now, and it's a decent place to stop. But it's equally possible I'll love Rick Remender's writing and keep picking this up.
