Weekly Previews for December 28, 2011

Getting back into the swing of things after Christmas, here's the last Previews of 2011! There are no endings here, but there are a couple of penultimate issues, one of a series and one of a writer's run. We're also going back to the beginnings — or closer to them, anyway — with the second point five issue of The Unwritten. For those and the rest, read on.

Alpha Flight #7

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Dale Eaglesham
  • Cover by Carlo Pagulayan

IT’S REVOLUTION, BUB!

Alpha Flight marches on to reclaim the Canadian government from the fascist forces that have overtaken it, but one Canadian citizen and former ally might disagree with their tactics… WOLVERINE! It’s Canuck versus Canuck as the battle for Canada continues! Master craftsmen Fred Van Lente, Greg Pak and Dale Eaglesham continue their lauded run!

This has been an up-and-down series. Lately it's been more up than down. Let's hope that continues into the last two issues.

Angel and Faith #5

  • Written by Christos Gage
  • Art by Phil Noto
  • Colors by Dan Jackson
  • Cover by Steve Morris
  • Variant Cover by Rebekah Isaacs

It's a dark and foggy night in London, and Angel and Faith are about to encounter a most unexpected visitor. Superceleb vampire Harmony Kendall returns! When a stalker threatens to expose one of Harm's misdeeds, she solicits the help of wayward heroes Angel and Faith. With her little pups, her friend Clem, and her Hollywood entourage by her side, Harmony is taking the UK by storm!

Harmony and Clem in the same issue? Sweet. (Pictured is the variant cover.)

FF #13

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils by Juan Bobillo
  • Cover by Mike Choi

ALL HOPE LIES IN DOOM, PART 2: PANIC ROOM

The Battle between the Council of Reeds and the Future Foundation extends through the BRIDGE and into the world now controlled by the Mad Celestials.

Everything's still great about this book excepting the new art. I'm not liking it at all. And we've got at least four more issues of it. Bleh. On the other hand, taking on Celestials? Awesome.

The Flash #4

  • Written by Francis Manapul & Brian Buccellato
  • Art & Cover by Francis Manapul
  • Variant Cover by Eric Basaldua

As Central City remains dark from the recent EMP blast, The Fastest Man Alive remains in hot pursuit of the one who set it off: Mob Rule! What does Mob Rule really want? Learn the rest of his origin right here!

It's getting hard to ignore the rave reviews of Francis Manapul's art in this book, as well as the praise for the writing. I'm thinking about switching from Action Comics to this. AC hasn't been thrilling me lately. We'll have to see if the two-month wait for the continuation of the story is a stroke of genius or just plain annoying, but if it's the latter, and I don't just save the cash, The Flash is a strong contender for those dollars.

Secret Avengers #20

  • Written by Warren Ellis
  • Pencils by Alex Maleev
  • Cover by John Cassaday

RUN THE MISSION! DON'T GET SEEN! SAVE THE WORLD!

The Secret Avengers are all dead save for the Black Widow. The world's greatest secret agent finds herself one year in the past, on the most secret mission of all: saving her team, and saving the world, without letting anyone see her... especially her team.

I'm just loving this run. I'm hopeful that Rick Remender's upcoming run will be just as good, but I'll bask in the glory of Warren Ellis's series of one-shots rather than worry about the future.

The Unwritten #32.5

  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Art by Peter Gross & Dean Ormston
  • Cover by Yuko Shimizu

In ancient Mesopotamia, just after the Flood that almost ended the world, the hero-king Gilgamesh embarks on a monster-hunt – but the biggest monster may be walking at his side. A time-lost legend that casts unexpected light on the most ruthless of Tom’s enemies: the man known as Pullman.

I'm also loving these point five issues (okay, this is only the second one). It's an awesome look at history in the (only slightly different) world of The Unwritten. And the Council looks more and more to have existed since time immemorial — especially Pullman.
