Weekly Previews for December 14, 2011

Christmas preparations have put me a bit behind this week. It also doesn't help that the second week of the month is my largest in terms of pull-list books. With a trio of Bat-books, a couple of Dark books, and the newest issue of The Unwritten, DC's taking the lion's share this week. Buffy, Jim Henson, and a coloring book (!) round of the rest of the PrePostviews this week, so read on and check it out.

A Tale of Sand (HC)

  • Written by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl
  • Art & Cover by Ramón Pérez

Join us as we explore this missing piece of Jim Henson’s career in a celebration of his creative process. Discovered in the Archives of The Jim Henson Company, Tale of Sand is an original graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced, feature-length screenplay written by Jim Henson and his frequent writing partner, Jerry Juhl. Tale of Sand follows scruffy everyman, Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions. Produced with the complete supervision of Jim’s daughter, Lisa Henson, Tale of Sand will allow Henson fans to recognize some of the inspirations and set pieces that appeared in later Henson Company productions.

This is out of my budget for right now ($24.95 on top of my normal pull list is too much), but it'll go on my list of trades and graphic novels to buy and/or check out later. I'm all for anything that came from the mind of Jim Henson.

Batgirl’s secret past finally catches up to her as she races to a final confrontation with the deadly sociopath Mirror! All the answers start right here in this thrilling issue!

Batman and Robin #4

  • Written by Peter J. Tomasi

Batman and Robin are at the mercy of NoBody as he forces them to embrace a new way to battle crime and injustice. But Batman has other ideas! Plus: Don’t miss the origin of NoBody!

Batwoman #4

  • Written by J.H. Williams III & W. Haden Blackman
  • Art and Cover by J.H. Williams III

Blood drenches the back alleys of Gotham City in Part four of “Hydrology” – and Batwoman’s life begins to burn!

I'm still enjoying all these Bat-books, so to save on time, I'm lumping them all together here. I like the way they're all heading so far.

Status: Buying Them.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 9 #4

  • Written by Andrew Chambliss
  • Pencils by Georges Jeanty
  • Inks by Dexter Vines
  • Colors by Michelle Madsen
  • Cover by Steve Morris
  • Variant Cover by Georges Jeanty

As Xander, Dawn, and Willow retreat into their own complicated lives, Buffy finds herself drawn more closely to her new friend Severin, a mysterious crime fighter in his own right, and a snappy dresser to boot. Together they take on a new kind of vampire threat while Buffy's not-in-the-know roomies start snooping through her unslept-in bedroom. Now what could they possibly find?

I also like the way this has been going. It's similar to some earlier (as in TV) Buffy. In this case, her friends are alienating her more than the other way around, and the status quo is almost flipped around, too. All in all, it's very intriguing.

Demon Knights #4

  • Written by Paul Cornell
  • Art by Mike Choi, Diogenes Neves & Oclair Albert
  • Cover by Mike Choi

It wasn’t a coincidence that the Shining Knight found herself in Little Spring as the Horde massed at the village gates. She’s on a quest, and has been all her long life – whether she’s known it or not! Now, a powerful vision will reveal to her the true stakes of the battle for Little Spring and pull back the curtain on one of the biggest secrets in the DC Universe! Don’t miss “Merlin Watches The Storm,” featuring guest art by the sensational Mike Choi (X-Force)! And yes, “storm” is a hint.

This is, straight-up, a fun book. Nothing really deep or hard-hitting yet (though Madame Xanadu is remaining in her dire condition for longer than I expected), but it doesn't need to be. It's just a lot of fun. Medieval fantasy battles? Heck yeah! Add in that it seems to be moving towards a bit more depth (or at least breadth), and I'm even more excited to see this down the road.

Resurrection Man #4

  • Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
  • Art by Fernando Dagnino
  • Cover by Ivan Reis & Joe Prado

Who is the Transhuman? And why is he risking his life for the Resurrection Man? And even with his help, will our hero be able to fend off the bounty-hunting Body Doubles and the forces of both Heaven and Hell?

The Transhuman is my favorite new character so far in the new DCU. And while I first thought I wouldn't like the battle for Mitch's soul, it's pleasantly, surprisingly good.

Super Dinosaur Deluxe Coloring Book!

  • Written by Robert Kirkman
  • Art & Cover by Jason Howard

Holy smokes! It’s Super Dinosaur! It’s Derek Dynamo! It’s Max Maximus! It’s the Mega-Raptor! They’re all here – and they’re all in black and white! Hours upon hours of enjoyment is to be had in this deluxe coloring book! Woo!

IT’S A COLORING BOOK!

I'm not a huge fan of Super Dinosaur; it's pretty good for kids, I guess, but looks a little fluffy from the issue or two I've read. But. This is the best idea ever. If they ever make a Gladstone's School for World Conquerors coloring book, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

The Unwritten #32

  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Art by Peter Gross & M.K. Perker
  • Cover by Yuko Shimizu

Tom’s battle against the cabal continues, with Glitterspar as the ultimate sanction. But Tom discovers that letting storybook magic into your world is playing with fire – and ice.

I'm a little behind on my reading, but I'm super excited for this story. But then, I'm always excited for this book. (But still, moreso for this arc.)
