Weekly Previews for November 2, 2011

Keepin' the commentary short this week. Too much on my plate. I will say that if you haven't been picking up the Smurfs books as they've been releasing them, now's the perfect time to catch up. Papercutz is releasing a box set of their first three Smurfs trades, The Purple Smurfs, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, and The Smurf King. This is not a compilation but a slipcased set of these books, all of which are the original Smurfs comics by Peyo and all of which are excellent.

Okay, now for the main show!

Action Comics #3

  • Written by Grant Morrison
  • Art by Rags Morales, Brent Anderson & Rick Bryant
  • Cover by Rags Morales
  • Variant Cover by Mike Choi

“Superman, Go Home!” In a startling tale only Grant Morrison could bring you, the people of Metropolis turn on their new champion! But why? Plus, shocking secrets from Krypton revealed!

I've been enjoying this quite a bit. I can see the nice big story he's building here, and I'm interested to see it come to fruition. Also, nice art.

Animal Man #3

  • Written by Jeff Lemire
  • Art & Cover by Travel Foreman

Maxine and Buddy swim to the heart of the Life Web and come face to face with the Totems...caretakers of the Red. But before they can get answers, the Hunters Three attack. Meanwhile, Ellen and Cliff fight for their lives back home. The Hunt heats up!

Not digging the art as much here, but there are moments where it's wonderful. This is an odd story that just jumps right into the oddness, but that's not really a bad thing.

The Infinite Vacation #3

  • Written by Nick Spencer
  • Art by Christian Ward

Mark's on the run from the makers of the Infinite Vacation, a commercial venture that allows users to move between alternate realities. After learning more about the Vacation's secrets from a mysterious woman, his newfound enemies call upon a deadly alternate version of himself to deal with their problems once and for all!

Finally! Image has been putting out some really good books lately, but there's been some horrendous delays. I've been waiting for this for months. And I've been loving the book, so that makes it even worse.

Our Love is Real

  • Written by Sam Humphries
  • Art & Cover by Steven Sanders

The comic book "surprise hit of the summer" is back – and Image has it! In wide release for the very first time! See it for yourself – the book that has everyone buzzing: OUR LOVE IS REAL!

THE FUTURE IS HERE! Plantsexuals riot in the streets for equal rights. Humans fall in love with dogs. And crystals are more than just jewelry. A chance encounter on the job changes a riot cop's life forever as he finds himself caught in a bizarre love triangle that blurs romance, crime, and lust beyond recognition.

OUR LOVE IS REAL is a bold new sci-fi one-shot written by SAM HUMPHRIES (one of Wizard's "Five Writers to Watch in 2011," CBGB, Fraggle Rock) and illustrated by STEVEN SANDERS (Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age, FIVE FISTS OF SCIENCE).

I've heard good things about this. It's definitely an odd story, one which I'm not 100% certain I'll be into, but I'll take a hard look.

Peanuts #0

  • Written by Charles Schulz, Ron Zorman & Vicki Scott
  • Art by Paige Braddock, Vicki Scott, Ron Zorman & Lisa Moore

Happiness is a monthly comic book series, Charlie Brown! Peanuts came to KABOOM! last spring in their first graphic novel, Happiness Is A Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown. Now Snoopy and the gang are back in monthly comic books! The series kicks off with a special #0 featuring a new original story and supplementary material that will provide a sneak peek at the series launching in January!

Not sure how I feel about this. In one sense, I think we as a society need to just let things go. We're especially bad with newspaper strips — sons and grandsons writing and drawing strips that started almost 100 years ago; creators running their creation into the ground *coughgarfieldcough* (seriously, it hasn't been good for 20 years or so; in fact, the only interesting thing he does now is the title panel for the Sunday strips); etc etc. But, on the other hand, I love to see good stories about superheroes that have been around for 50, 60, 70+ years; whose creators have long since died or moved on to other things, so why are newspaper strips different? I guess because they're more akin to a creator-owned book. But, I'm of two minds on it, so … I'll take a look.

Shame Itself

  • Written by Wyatt Cenac, Michael Kupperman, Elliott Kalan, victor Varnado & more
  • Pencils by Colleen Coover, Dean Haspiel, Clayton Henry & more
  • Cover by Skottie Young

GET READY FOR THE MOST EARTH SHATTERING, WORLD DESTROYING, INSURANCE-RATE HIKING, EVENT IN MARVEL HISTORY SINCE THE LAST ONE! Wyatt Cenac and Elliott Kalan of “The Daily Show” lead a cavalcade of comedy’s finest minds to answer the questions about the Marvel Universe you were ashamed to ask! This Fall, the Marvel U will be rocked down to its spandex wearing core! Be ashamed. Be VERY ashamed!

The industry needs books like this. If you can't laugh at yourself, you really need to calm down and get over yourself. (On the other hand, sometimes people are just mean, and I don't think you need to just accept that. But I think this is light-hearted.)
