Weekly Previews for October 6, 2010

A bunch of favorites to start off the month: Buffy, Hercules, Power Pack, and Jonathan Hickman! Read on to feel the love! And the excitement! And the exclamation marks! (Okay, there's actually very little of that last one.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8 #37

  • Written by Joss Whedon
  • Pencils by Georges Jeanty
  • Inks by Andy Owens
  • Colors by Michelle Madsen
  • Cover by Jo Chen

Spike and Buffy are finally reunited (*sigh*) and lucky him—he’s discovered the source of all her problems, and it’s not Angel. Now Buffy must revisit the place where love was indiscriminate, the Scoobies were formed, and Hell’s mouth was closed for good.

Joss Whedon and Georges Jeanty launch readers into the finale of Buffy Season Eight, promising more adventure, twists, and turns. Bonds are tested, lives altered, and oh!—the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

I've been a more than a little worried about the whole “Angel is Twilight and wants to take Buffy away to a magical fairy land where everything is wonderful etc etc” thing. It seemed out of character for Angel, and I had no clue how he was supposed to get there from where he is in his own series. Well, the last issue took care of a lot of that worry. Angel and Spike have had a lot going on, it seems, and they've been “magicked” (or something) here. And, apparently Angel has been led into this role (as he always seems to be). So, I'm feeling much better about, gee, the main story in this whole series? Yeah, that'd be it. I'm still curious as to where we're going, but I'm more genuinely interested now with less of the hoping it'll all make sense.

Chaos War #1

  • Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
  • Pencils by Khoi Pham
  • Cover by Ed McGuinness

Bigger than THE INFINITY GAUNTLET! More cosmic than ANNIHILATION! Since the end of SECRET INVASION, the CHAOS KING has amassed his army of alien slave gods -- and the time to strike Earth is NOW! Only the greatest Marvel heroes can oppose him -- all led by the newly-returned god of heroes ... HERCULES! But are even his incredible new powers enough to stand against the greatest threat the Marvel Universe has ever seen — a mad god who seeks to destroy Reality itself? PLUS: While thought dead, Hercules was trapped in a dangerous world that threatened his very sanity. Find out the secret of his exile in a special extra story penciled by PRINCE OF POWER's Reilly Brown!

I really liked the recent Incredible Hercules art (I only started reading with the Thorcules arc). So, I wasn't sure about the new artist (even though he's apparently done Herc before). But, I saw a preview in Secret Avengers, and it works pretty well. Now, as long as Pak and Van Lente keep writing how they've been doing Hercules and don't get messed up with the whole “event” thing, this will be one of my favorite titles.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #4

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils & Inks by Dustin Weaver
  • Colors by Christina Strain
  • Lettering by Todd Klein
  • Cover by Gerald Parel

“THE MADNESS, THE STAR CHILD AND THE CELESTIAL MADONNA” The hottest book of 2010 continues! The world is still shaking from the revelations of #3 and there are more where those came from. IN THIS ISSUE- The true history of Nostradamus, the defeat of a Celestial at the hands of a mortal man and HOW THE WORLD ENDS! Oh, and Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR) and Dustin Weaver (X-MEN) have also created the most troubling idea ever—THE FOETUS OF GOD!

So, I felt like the last issue was bringing things together to move ahead in a big way this issue. I should've read the solicits before writing that. Hickman keeps surprising me with his writing — both here and in Fantastic Four. I hadn't thought of Nostradamus having such a large role (he seemed more like a tool in previous issues), but it looks like I was wrong. I'm curious to see what happens.

Thor and the Warriors Four (Digest)

  • Written by Alex Zalben
  • Pencils & Cover by Gurihiru

Power Pack's biggest adventure ever begins, as they desperately search for the only person who can save the life of their grandmother — THE MIGHTY THOR! But first, they're going to need to get to Asgard, and that means joining forces with Frog Thor and THE PET AVENGERS! An epic tale that starts with a book of myths and ends with the destruction of the entire world, this is a journey into mystery that will leave Power Pack changed — forever!

It's Power Pack. I've gotten every one of these digests (smaller-sized trades, in case you don't know — kids' titles are often collected this way), and I've loved every one. And it has Gurihiru on the art. They are the original and my favorite art team for this series. And, the second issue's cover has Katie Power, holding a saddle, chasing Beta Ray Bill and yelling Pony! That is reason enough to buy this. (And I would've bought the single issues, but I always buy this in digests — largely because the kids read 'em, and they last a bit longer that way.)

Ultimate Comics Thor #1

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Pencils & Cover by Carlos Pacheco

Exploding from the pages of the Ultimates, comes Ultimate Thor! Don't miss the superstar team-up of JONATHAN HICKMAN and CARLOS PACHECO as they go back to the beginning and tell the origin of Thor, Loki and the rest of Asgard! Ragnorak has descended and Asgard sits at the edge of the end. What will become of Thor and the Warriors Three? And what exactly does Baron Zemo, mysterious commander for the Nazis, have to do with it all? Ultimate Comics Thor brings you the untold story of Thor's thunderous debut!

I have never read an “Ultimate” comic; I have no idea if I'd like it. I have never read a Thor comic. They most I've seen of Thor is from recent issues of Incredible Hercules (and the mini-events continuing that story). I do like the Norse gods, but I don't know if I like Marvel's idea of them. But — I do love Jonathan Hickman and I'm willing to give this a shot on that alone.
