Weekly Previews for September 29, 2010

If Wednesday = new comics, then Tuesday = Previews. Read on to see what I'll be looking at from this week's new releases.

Angel #37

  • Written by Bill Willingham
  • Backup Written by Bill Williams
  • Art by Elena Casagrande
  • Cover by Jenny Frison

Soul-Eaters. Demon armies. Dusting limbs. Prophecies run amok. The Angel-verse is always a little bit strange. But with Connor’s life in danger, Angel has to step up and take back his city. The only problem is that it may be too late.

Okay, I'm actually a bit behind on my reading. I haven't read #36 yet, but I'm always excited to see a new issue of Angel, especially since Bill Willingham has been writing it.

Detective Comics #869

  • Written by David Hine
  • Art by Scott McDaniel & Andy Owens
  • Cover by Peter Nguyen

"Impostors" continues here! Madness and mayhem face off against law and order for control of Gotham City, and not even the Batman is safe! With The Joker Impostor leading the charge of chaos and filling the streets of Gotham with his army of Jokerz, the ranks of the Batman Impostor's army grow thanks to regular citizens choosing sides and taking up arms. But what is Impostor Joker's ultimate goal – and what does it have to do with the real Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime?

While I wasn't too thrilled at first, this arc is starting to move in a better direction. I'm hoping it will continue that shift here. One of the best parts of the last issue was the Imposter Joker's motivations, and it looks like that will start moving to the spotlight.

Time Masters: Vanishing Point #3

  • Written by Dan Jurgens
  • Art & Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund

The Time Masters have been coming up short in their search for Batman throughout the time stream, so Rip Hunter reluctantly turns to some experts on the subject…the Linear Men are back!

Don't miss this companion series to the "Return of Bruce Wayne" storyline running in BATMAN!

This has been a really fun comic to read. I know very little of Rip Hunter-related characters (like the Linear Men), but I'm finding out a bit about them and just enjoying the ride. I now consider it an added bonus that they might be getting back on track in the search for Bruce Wayne.

Valkyrie #1

  • Written by Bryan J.L. Glass
  • Pencils by Phil Winslade
  • Inks by Phil Winslade
  • Colors by Veronica Yanina Gandini
  • Cover by Jay Anacleto

From the pages of SECRET AVENGERS—the untold story of the rebirth of Valkyrie! In AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED, Ragnarok claimed the lives of the Asgardians, until they were reborn along with Thor himself…but when and how did the legendary shield maiden Brunhilde return? How does a murder mystery hold all the answers? And how can Valkyrie solve the riddle of her own death? Dare a glimpse into the soul of Marvel's most misunderstood heroine, and witness her transformation from myth to Defender to Avenger! Featuring the Marvel Universe writing debut of acclaimed writer Bryan J.L. Glass (The Mice Templar), and the stunning pencils of Phil Winslade (Wonder Woman)!

I'm not sure if I'll have any room for extra comics this month, but this might be one to check out. I've heard a lot of good things about Bryan J.L. Glass and his Mice Templar series (though this isn't his Marvel debut, as the solicit states — he's writing Thor: First Thunder which debuted two weeks ago).

Thanks for the good VALKYRIE words! This actually is my Marvel Universe writing debut, as it was written before THOR: FIRST THUNDER. Both were originally solicited as coming out on the same day, but then for some reason unknown to me, they bumped Valkyrie back by two weeks!
I hope you find extra room, that Valkyrie makes her way into your bag, and that you enjoy the story. :)

@Bryan J.L.: I make my monthly trip Wednesday, and I've seen a very good review since posting this, so it's going to be a lot harder to not make room, now. :)
