Weekly Previews for September 15, 2010

A short-but-sweet list in this week's Previews. We get the hardcover release of the second Oz series and a couple of my favorite pull-list comics. Keep reading to find out what they were.

The Marvelous Land of Oz (HC)

  • Written by Eric Shanower
  • Pencils & Cover by Skottie Young

The epic continues! Fresh off their landmark run on THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF OZ, superstars ERIC SHANOWER (Age of Bronze) and SKOTTIE YOUNG (X-MEN) return with L. Frank Baum's MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ. Join new characters Tip and Jack Pumpkinhead as they're whisked to Oz, and meet foes and friends! You've NEVER seen L. Frank Baum's masterpiece like this before.

Last week brought us the trade paperback of the first collection of Marvel's Oz books, and this week brings us the hardcover of the second collection. If you read last week's previews, you know that I love the Oz books, and Skottie Young's art is a perfectly whimsical match to the stories. When I saw the cover to the last issue of this series, I had a mix of almost-tears and glee. It's a great portrayal of the climax of the book. I await the day I can fit this and the first collection in my comics budget.

The Unwritten #17

  • Written by Mike Carey
  • Layouts by Peter Gross
  • Finishes by Ryan Kelly
  • Cover by Yuko Shimizu

Special guest artist Ryan Kelly provides finishes over Peter Gross's art for "The Lives of Lizzie Hexam: A Choose-a-Story adventure." Enter the mind of Lizzie Hexam, Tom Taylor's fervent but enigmatic guardian, and explore the contradictory, impossible events that made her what she is. Is she a victim or champion? A madwoman or a saint? That's for you and fate to decide as you pick the story's path. The multiple Eisner-nominated series tells its most ambitious stand-alone story to date in an oversized, interactive issue!

Every issue of The Unwritten has been stellar. Every. Single. One. This looks to be even better: a choose-your-own-adventure comic? 'Nuff said.

X-Factor #209

  • Written by Peter David
  • Pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino
  • Inks by Sebastian Fiumara
  • Colors by Jeromy Cox
  • Cover by David Yardin

It may happen in Vegas, but it's very likely not going to stay there as X-Factor in general--and Longshot in particular-- are unleashed on the Las Vegas strip, determined to face down the goddess of death in her lair and save a very unusual client.

The only thing that bothers me about this book is the inconsistent art. It seems like they use X-Factor to test out new artists. I really wish they could get a good (doesn't have to be great, just good) artist and keep him (or her) on the book. Last issue was not good at all in the art department. As for the story, it looks like this one will be more focussed on the new client (which took backstage — or at least side stage — to the Rictor/Shatterstar/Wolfsbane drama over the past two issues). It'll be hard not to have fun with Longshot in Vegas.
